Location of the Technology High School

Vice President Furukawa-Schlereth stated that a need to review and consider the best location on campus for the Cotati-Rohnert Park Technical High School had resulted in the formation of a task force which included faculty, students, staff and the Cotati-Rohnert Park District. representation. This need was generated by the commitment of the campus to assign permanent space to this new program and the need to define the Major Capital Outlay project to renovate the Salazar library once the library moved into the Schultz Information Center. Mr. Furukawa-Schlereth gave a report on the recommendation from the task force charged with considering this issue. The recommendation, after considering potential locations in major campus building, was that the best location would be in the Salazar building once remodeled. The criteria considered during this evaluation was to located 15,000 contiguous square feet with standard classroom of 950 - 1500 square feet near a loading dock and restrooms with good entry/exit requirements. The task force reported that few of the other permanent buildings could satisfy this criteria without extensive disruption of existing programs. Deborah DuVall stated that the Salazar building will generate 74,000 net square feet of space for reallocation and that assigning 15,000 to the Technology High School would still allow for other uses. Steve Orlick raised the concern that high school students wandering through the campus might change the culture of campus and might subject the youths to inappropriate exposure. Marguerite St. Germain stated that she had had a similar concern until she talked to Ann Huber from the school district who outlined the policy and practices which would govern the high school students while on the SSU campus. From this conversation she had been assured her that sufficient controls would be in place. President Armi–ana commented that programs like this had been very successful on two other CSU campuses for eight to ten years without the anticipated problems between the high school students and the University students. He also asked the committee to consider the important issue of diversity on campus and anticipated that the creation of the high school had the potential to increase diversity on campus. Vice President Furukawa-Schlereth reminded the committee that the high school students would not be allowed into sensitive places such as the pub or the recreation center. Steve Orlick commented that he thought the Salazar building was too central for the location of the high school and would necessitate a tendency for the students to wander throughout the campus. Rocky Rohwedder pointed out that the pathways to Salazar from the existing high school were clear and direct and should help to mitigate that concern.Vice President Furukawa-Schlereth moved that the committee accept the recommendation of the task force. The motion was approved with one member not in favor.

Approval of the Site for an Events Tent

John Bond brought forward a proposal to erect an events tent in the vicinity of the campus lakes.The tent would be on a 41 x 41 foot concrete pad and would have electricity. The pad would be colored so as not to detract from the natural look of the area. The tent could be used for many general campus functions including special events, meetings, weddings, and student activities.John Bond moved that the committee approve the site and the concept for the tent. Vice President Furukawa-Schlereth seconded the motion and the committee approved it unanimously.

Status Report on the Master Plan Revision

Tom Jacobson summarized the Community Outreach Program currently underway to consider the proposed Draft Master Plan Revision. He described the workshops being conducted and the responses being received on the website. He summarized the content and issues that were being raised in the community including the issue of parking outside the academic core as opposed to parking close to the buildings; the issue of placement of future academic buildings as they relate to existing academic buildings and student services buildings; the concern being expressed to preserve the natural setting of Copeland Creek; and the entrance/exits sequencing of the campus road systems. Mr. Jacobson then outlined for the committee the plan to submit a formal summary of the issues and comments before the next meeting on May 6th to assist in the decision making process.
