Sponsorship Opportunities

Grade School Archaeology Internship

5th Grade Tour Cost of Internship: $1500

Sponsorship Levels: $100 and up

Student Level: Seniors and graduate students. Students enroll in ANTH 496 or 596.

What They Will Do: Students visit 5th grade classrooms to teach kids about archaeology and local Native Americans. Visits employ an ASC “teaching trunk”—a treasure chest-like box that contains artifacts and other hands-on material that make for a lively time. Class visits are hosted at the ASC on the Sonoma State University campus. Overseen by an ASC staff archaeologist and SSU anthropology Professor Adrian Praetzellis.

Student Benefit: Students learn how to prepare and present information to younger children. This is great experience for those considering being K-12 teachers.

Scientific/Social Benefit: The program is a perfect fit with the California 5th grade curriculum and California’s Common Core Standards. Visits provide unique opportunities for kids to handle archaeological artifacts, talk to a real archaeologist, and learn about Native American lifeways in the past and the present.

How Your Money Will Be Used: Potential uses include out of pocket expenses, such as SSU students’ transportation cost, school kids’ transportation costs, and staff and Student Assistant wages. Internship is taught as funds are available.
