Employer Recruiting Policy

To ensure the quality of our services and to limit the risk to Sonoma State University students, alumni and other users of our services, Sonoma State University Career Services establishes these policies and guidelines for all employer recruiting activities permitted by our office.

Basic Terms
Career Services at Sonoma State University support its student’s prospective employment choice by allowing employers to recruit and interview its students.  These employer recruiting activities include, but are not limited to: career fairs; on-campus interviews; information sessions; employer tabling; advertising career related opportunities on bulletin boards, in job binders, or online through Seawolf Jobs. 

To participate in employer recruiting activities, employers must meet the following basic terms:

The posting of all job and internship listings is a privilege, and done at the discretion of Career Services, which reserves the right to choose to not post a position if it does not appear to Career Services to support the best interests of students and/or the University.

Excluded Practices
Career Services will not permit employer recruiting activities if:

  • The job or internship involves "cold calling", door-to-door sales, in-home healthcare or child-care.
  • The organization compensation is commission-only or housing is provided in exchange for work.
  • The organization sponsors an individual to establish his/her own business for the purpose of selling products or services, and/or recruiting other individuals to establish their own businesses.
  • The organization requires an initial payment or investment, or account balance or similar, fiscal requirements with the organization itself serving as an umbrella or parent corporation.  Investments may include, but are not limited to: requirement to attend unpaid orientation or training sessions; direct payment of a fixed fee; payment to attend orientation or training sessions; and/or purchase, rent, or place deposit on a starter kit, sales kit, samples, or presentation supplies.
  • The organization fails, for any reason, to provide necessary information needed to post a job opening.
  • The organization is unable or unwilling to provide written documentation of registration with a Better Business Bureau if so requested.

Additional practices that may lead to exclusion from employer recruitment activities at Sonoma State University include, but not limited to: fraud, misrepresentation, breach of confidentiality, complaints by or harassment of Sonoma State University students, alumni, or staff,  and requiring personal information (e.g. bank and/or social security numbers) when not part of the hiring process.

Third Party Agencies  
Career Services will permit third party agencies to recruit at our annual career fair only.  However, depending on space limitations the number of third party organizations may be limited.  Agencies are welcome to attend our career fair to connect with students, but are not permitted to solicit our employers.  (In return, Career Services agrees not to solicit the third party agency’s clients.)

For participation in our career fair the agency must meet the following requirements:

  • The agency must provide the name of employer(s) being represented and permit Career Services to verify this information by contacting the client.
  • The agency must abide by Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and can only release candidate information with written permission of the candidate. Re-disclosure of candidate information is not permitted.

Alcohol Policy
Career Services adheres to the Sonoma State University policy on Alcoholic Beverages.  We also adhere to the guidelines set forth by National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), that serving alcohol should not be part of the recruitment process. This includes but is not limited to on-campus events, receptions, dinners, company tours, etc.

Career Services staff will investigate complaints by users of our services that may involve employers, job postings, or work assignments. If it is determined that the complaint is justified, Career Services reserves the right to reject future employer recruiting requests.

Career Services adheres to the aforementioned policies and guidelines to ensure the quality of our services and reserves the right to modify these terms and conditions at any time. All decisions regarding employer recruiting activities are made at the sole discretion of Career Services and Sonoma State University.
