Student Placements

In the Single Subject Credential Program, our placement coordinators arrange field placements with our partner schools. Placements are determined with careful attention to the needs of all parties involved:  schools, departments, and individual teachers, as well as the specific requests made by teacher candidates for location, type of school, specific subject area, and individual circumstances.

Please note, teacher candidates MAY NOT arrange their own placements. Please do not contact a teacher or school directly BEFORE being placed. Doing so will jeopardize your continuation in the program. Our placement coordinators have worked, taught, and placed candidates in the North Bay for many years; please respect their expertise and ability to navigate the many moving parts of the placement process.

Requirements for Placement

For Observation/Participation placement, these requirements MUST be successfully completed and on file in the School of Education Credentials Office:

  • Negative TB test results
  • Certificate of Clearance
  • Completion of School of Education Legal Seminar
  • Passing CBEST score
  • Passing CSET scores
  • Completion of pre-requisite courses with at least a 3.0 GPA

Placements are made using a variety of criteria, including the school district’s ability to cluster candidates at a school site, how many student teachers each school can accommodate, and your choices about geographic region.

Teacher candidates generally progress to student teaching the semester immediately following successful completion of Phase I courses at the SAME school where they have been placed for their observation and participation.

Placement FAQ's

Expand/Collapse all

SSU’s placement coordinators work closely with schools to place the entire cohort of teacher candidates in our partner schools.  It’s a big puzzle which has to fit together; teacher candidates making their own arrangements jeopardizes that process and is not allowed.  Schools do not want students to make their own arrangements; administrators expect to work directly with placement coordinators.

We understand that not all students are settled in their residences when applying to the credential program.  Contact your placement coordinator as soon as you know where you will be living while attending SSU.

If you aren’t sure who your placement coordinator is, you can determine whom to contact by region (Kirsten Searby for north of campus, TBA for south of campus).  We are accessible by phone or e-mail (see contact info above).

The placement process occurs throughout the spring, typically March-May.  Every school and district functions differently, but typically you will be expected to visit the campus prior to confirmation of your placement.  Your placement coordinator will guide you through this process, according to the specific school’s procedures.

Your placement coordinator will contact you via e-mail or phone to confirm your placement.
You will receive additional information about field experience requirements in EDSS 443B.

Please read the Student Handbook or contact the Department Chair or your Placement Coordinator.
