What I Do at SSU

I teach a variety of courses in English Education and linguistics, as well as teaching in the MA TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) program in the School of Education. I’m always available to talk to students who are interested in study abroad, teaching and working overseas, or local internship opportunities.

Professor Vollmer received a PhD from the School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley with a specialization in applied linguistics and second language acquisition. Her teaching, research and professional development work with teachers focuses primarily on genre theory and genre-based pedagogy, second language acquisition, and multilingual writers. She has offered English language and pedagogy courses in Argentina, Hong Kong, China, Chile, Turkey and Italy (most recently as a Fulbright Senior Specialist from 2005-2010). In addition, she is the Academic Specialist to the Puente Project, a state-wide college preparation program for under-represented students, and she serves as adjunct faculty for the MUSE Credential Program at UC Berkeley. She is currently coordinator of the Linguistics Minor and the Community Involvement Project for the English Department.

Dr. Vollmer is the former Director of the Bay Area Writing Project, a collaborative project between the School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley and Bay Area schools. The Bay Area Writing Project is the founding site and member of the National Writing Project network, one of the largest professional development programs in the United States.
