Environmental Studies & Planning

As of Fall 2017 the department of Environmental Studies and Planning and the department of Geography and Global Studies will merge to become a single entity: Geography, Environment, and Planning. By bringing the assets of our two departments together we are producing synergies which will benefit students by providing greater resilience as they pursue their chosen field of study, and towards graduation and career. In many ways this merge is part of an organic process that has been on-going for many years. Increasingly students from both majors have been taking courses taught in the companion department, to the point that many students have declared minors in Geography or ENSP. The newly formulated study plans (which will become available to those declaring major beginning in Fall 2018) work to leverage faculty resources while providing both breadth and depth for students.

For current ENSP and GEOG students, degrees, study plans, and concentrations will remain unchanged for now; however, the department name will officially become GEP in Fall 2017 and course numbers will change. Beginning with Fall semester 2018 our degree title (not the same thing as department name) will become Geography and Environment. At that point students who declare GEP as their major will follow new study plans in six concentrations: Society, Environment, and Development (BA); Environmental Systems (BA); Geospatial Analysis and Technology (BA); Sustainable Communities, General (BA); Sustainable Communities, Planning (BA); and Energy Management and Design (BS).

For further information, please contact the current Chairs of Geography and Global Studies and/or ENSP.  We will hold an informational meeting for current students on April 11 in the Environmental Technology Center, 12noon-1pm.
