In the fast-paced business world of the 21st century, some opportunities may be missed with carefully pre-planned traditional project management practices. Rapid development and deployment of both physical and intellectual products requires a more aggressive approach, a more flexible approach, a more agile approach. Agile is the preferred methodology of projects tasked to deliver intangibles, such as software, web sites, or employee programs. It is especially useful in complex situations where the deliverable and the process to deliver it are not clearly understood at the beginning of the project. Today’s organizations are adding agile concepts to their daily operations, benefiting from the focus on quick and cost efficient delivery of value to the customer.

The Sonoma State University Agile Project Management Certification Course covers the fastest growing segment of the project management profession. The course satisfies the educational requirements necessary to sit for the Project Management Institute Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)® examination. There are no educational or experience prerequisites for the Sonoma State University Agile Project Management Certification course.

The course does not include the PMI exam as that must be administered by a PMI-licensed testing facility.

The class will meet for about 3 hours one night a week for 15 weeks. Each class meeting will start with a "stand-up" and will conclude with a "retrospective." A typical class will begin with a practice quiz from the prior week's assignment, a discussion of selected quiz questions, and a lecture introducing the next weekly topic. Most class meetings will include teambuilding exercises. A comprehensive final exam will be held on the last class meeting. The practice quizzes and the final exam will use the same question format as the PMI-ACP examination.

Course topics will include:

  • Agile frameworks, terminology, and the agile manifesto
  • Agile methods, approaches, and processes
  • Agile contracting, accounting, risk management, and tools
  • Regulatory compliance, flow diagrams, customer-valued prioritization, and earned value management
  • Adaptive leadership, agile team roles, building agile teams
  • Affinity estimation, discovery, sizing and estimating techniques
  • Control limits, cost of change, cycle time, and defect rate
  • Escaped defects, expected monetary value, failure and success modes, and lead time
  • Agile hybrid models, approved iterations, and continuous improvement
  • Feedback, fishbone analysis, five whys, kaizen, learning cycles
  • The PMI Code of ethics, and professional conduct
