SEIE Online Learning FAQ

Online Campus programs at SSU are available 24/7, which means that you can access your course at any time of the day and any time of the week. And just like traditional on-ground classes, online classes have weekly due dates, ongoing discussions and assignments. However, to successfully participate in any of the SSU online programs, you will need special skills and equipment.

The following frequently asked questions (FAQs) provide information about online classes:

What Are the Recommended Skills?

There are some special skills that you should possess if you want to participate in an online program. For example, if you are:

  • a motivated and disciplined self-starter with strong study skills and enjoy reading and writing
  • efficient at time-management
  • willing to log into class at least 3-4 times a week to work on individual and group assignments and participate in class discussions
  • able to create, save, upload, and download electronic files and documents
  • knowledgeable about the Web and can send and receive e-mail attachments

then an online education might be right for you!

What is the Required Computer Equipment?

In addition to special skills, online programs require computer equipment (hardware and software) to participate in the classes:

  • access to a computer
  • Microsoft® Office 2008 or later (can be inexpensively purchased at SSU bookstore)
  • a fast and reliable Internet connection, preferable broadband (i.e., DSL or cable modem)
  • an Internet browser
  • an e-mail account
  • basic word-processing skills
  • updated anti-virus software
What are the Technical Requirements and Tools?

Internet Explorer 7.0® or Firefox® 2.x preferred

For the Mac user:
Apple® OSx version 10.4 or above

Where are the online classes?

Classes, including discussions and labs, are held through the Internet. Students and faculty use a course management system called Moodle for all online classes. Moodle is a richly complex computer application that lives on our local server and backup servers on campus and at a distance (in case of earthquakes or other disasters). You "go to campus" by visiting and logging in (click on link that says "login" in white bar at top of page) by using your Seawolf ID and password. Once you've logged in, you will see all the classes you have enrolled in for the current semester. To "go to" each class, simply click on the name of the course. You will find announcements, a syllabus, weekly assignments, readings, a place for groups to meet, links to other websites, and information on how to hand in your assignments and participate in class discussions.

How many times a week should I log in for class?

Log into Moodle 3 or 4 times a week to check messages, for lectures and other course materials, to hand in assignments, to work in groups, to have discussions, and to take exams.

Will I need to physically visit the campus?

It depends on your program. Some programs, like the Wine Business Certificate Program, are entirely online and do not require a visit. Other programs may require specified campus visits a few times during the course. Check with your instructor to know whether your course is entirely online or hybrid (partly online and partly face to face).

How do I purchase class materials?

If computer software or textbooks are required for your class, you may purchase them online through the SSU Bookstore, North Light Books at 1720 East Cotati Avenue in Rohnert Park, CA, or at the online site of your choice.

What is my Seawolf ID?

Your Seawolf ID is your personal SSU student identification number. It gives you access to MySSU, Seawolf gmail (which is required to use, but which can be forwarded to your personal email), and Moodle as well as parking. You receive your Seawolf ID with its when your payment for the class has been processed.
