Due to the structure of the program, the Hutchins School of Liberal Studies generally accepts new students at the Freshman or Junior level in the Fall semester. Spring admission for junior transfer students may be available if space permits. When applying to Sonoma State University, all students seeking admission to the Hutchins School should list "Liberal Studies/Hutchins, Hutchins School" as their major.

  • Due to the focus on reading and writing imbedded in the Hutchins seminar format, it’s highly recommended that students applying as Freshmen are eligible to enroll in General Education level English Composition (SAT Evidence Based Reading and Writing: 550, ACT English: 22, EAP** CSU English “Ready” or fulfillment of EAP** “Conditionally Ready” criteria).
  • Students seeking enrollment in the Hutchins Track III/Blended Program as Freshmen should place into General Education math (SAT Math: 570, ACT Math: 23, EAP** CSU Mathematics “Ready” or fulfillment of EAP** “Conditionally Ready” criteria).
  • When entering the Track III Blended Program as Freshmen, students must file a separate Blended Information Packet with the Hutchins School of Liberal Studies directly. Please visit our Student Forms section to download the Track III/Blended Program Information packet.
  • Those seeking admission to the Track I or Track II program as Junior transfers must meet SSU upper division transfer requirements and have a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA. Please visit SSU Admissions for transfer admission information.

Current Sonoma State students seeking admission into the Hutchins program must complete a separate application process. Students can begin this application process by contacting the Hutchins School Main Office at (707) 664-2492.
