Welcome to the Tutorial Program

The Tutorial Program strives to meet the academic needs of all SSU enrolled students by providing free peer tutoring in over 50 courses each semester, as well as weekly drop-in math tutoring and embedded computer science lab tutoring. Our goal is to empower students with the necessary skills, tools, and mindsets to become critical thinkers and independent learners.
Our peer tutors are faculty recommended, model students who are trained to adjust their tutoring to students’ learning preferences. Tutors can help students review the course content, develop study skills, and increase their overall confidence as a student.
The Tutorial Program primarily assists students in Biology, Business, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, Physics, Math, Modern Languages and Music. We also offer drop-in math tutoring three days a week to help students with many introductory level math courses and have embedded computer science lab tutoring for select computer science courses. As a student-centered program, we also hire subject-specific tutors based on student demand.
For more information about scheduling tutoring sessions, supported classes and requesting tutoring support for your course, please stop by the Learning and Academic Resource Center (LARC), on the first floor of the library, or call 707-664-4401.

Guidelines

  • Tutoring may be recommended by faculty or advisor, however, it is always the student’s responsibility to schedule a tutoring session.
  • Students can schedule up to two 1-hour appointments per week, with each tutor. There is no hourly limit for drop-in math tutoring or computer science embedded lab tutoring.
  • Students can meet with the tutor in the Learning and Academic Resource Center (LARC) during business hours or elsewhere on campus.
  • Students can schedule same-day appointments, but we highly recommend scheduling in advance. Students should come to tutorial sessions prepared: having attended class and taken notes, with all necessary books and materials, having attempted homework and read assignments.
  • The tutor is a successful student, but not a teacher or expert. Though a tutor is a great resource, they will not do the student’s work and is not responsible for the student’s final course grade.

Late Cancellation & No-Show Policy

  • Students must reschedule or cancel appointments at least 24 hours in advance. If a student fails to cancel 24 hours before their scheduled session and/or misses a session three times, the student will temporarily lose scheduling privileges.
  • To regain scheduling privileges, students must contact the LARC’s administrative coordinator, Gillian Estes at estesg@sonoma.edu.
