United States Air Force Band of the Golden West
: The Commanders Jazz Ensemble swinging into Rohnert Park

The Commanders Jazz Ensemble, part of the US Air Force Band of the Golden West from Travis Air Force Base, is swinging into Rohnert Park for a free concert at Weill Hall on Sunday, December 9, at 8 :00 p.m. This free performance will feature the SSU Jazz Orchestra, led by Doug Leibinger, with vocalist Bonnie Brooks.
Under the direction of Senior Master Sergeant Rick Thorp, The Commanders carries on the American musical tradition of the great traveling big bands, yet offers a lot more than the big band sounds. This energetic group of professional airmen-musicians plays traditional jazz, cool, bop and swing; Broadway favorites, popular tunes, Latin rhythms, and patriotic music.
During a concert you’re likely to hear the music of jazz legends Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, Count Basie and Charlie Parker as well as contemporary big band leaders and composers such as Gordon Goodwin and Maria Schneider. And no concert would be complete without a tribute to the late Major Glenn Miller and his famous Army Air Corp band.
Touring the western states as the only active-duty Air Force band west of the Rockies, the US Air Force Band of the Golden West has performed for thousands of listeners in live concert appearances and for millions worldwide via its numerous recordings and television and radio broadcasts.
