Guitar Duo Concert to Feature Commissioned Works

Two rising stars of the San Francisco chamber music scene will perform a duo classical guitar recital at Sonoma State on Feb. 5 at 7:30 pm in Schroeder Hall. The One Great City Duo includes San Francisco Conservatory of Music graduates Alexandra Iranfar, guitar and soprano, and Timothy Sherren, guitar. Preceding the recital a free guitar master class in Schroeder Hall is scheduled for 1-2:30 pm. (Info: 664-2324)

“They have a very eclectic range,” said Studio Guitar instructor Eric Cabalo. “I adjudicated the guitar/harp competition at the San Francisco Conservatory last year and I fell in love with their playing.” The duo, who are protégés of Sergio Assad, will present a unique listening experience combining standard guitar repertoire, commissioned works and arrangements that feature the voice.

Two works by San Francisco composer Eric Choate —The Bells and A Dream Within a Dream—were composed specifically for One Great City Duo, as was the two-movement Guitar Duo by New York-based composer Shahab Paranj.

Tickets are $8 and free to SSU students.

Schroeder Hall is located at Sonoma State’s Green Music Center, two miles east of Highway 101 on Rohnert Park Expressway, near the intersection with Petaluma Hill Road. Parking is available in lots L, M, N and O.

The San Francisco Examiner acclaims that One Great City Duo "brings a journey of discovery to every recital they prepare." One Great City Duo crystalized in 2011, combining Alexandra's abilities as a guitarist and a soprano with their love and dedication to chamber music. One Great City Duo recently recorded their debut album, titled “Excursions,” produced by Sérgio Assad. The duo released “Excursions” in January 2016. One Great City Duo is thrilled to have an ongoing collaboration with one of the Bay Area’s finest young composers, Eric Choate.
Season highlights include performances at the eighth annual SFMusic Day, the Presidio Sessions, as well as an interactive performance and presentation for the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Alumni Recital Series. One Great City Duo recently appeared at the Hot Air Music Festival, and on KALW 91.7 FM’s Revolutions Per Minute, hosted by Sarah Cahill. In March 2015, their collaboration with two outstanding young composers, Eric Choate and Shahab Paranj, was the feature of a brief documentary film.

Timothy and Alexandra completed their Master of Music degrees and Professional Studies Diplomas at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where they studied privately and as a duo with scholarship under Grammy Award-winning artist Sérgio Assad. One Great City Duo is a fiscally-sponsored affiliate of San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the service of chamber music in California.
