Gala Choral Event at Weill Hall to Benefit Food Bank

Sonoma State University Director of Choral Activities Jenny Bent is teaching her students about more than singing. They are learning about using the power of music as a catalyst to give back to the community.
On Sunday, October 21, at 4 p.m., the SSU Symphonic Chorus and Chamber Singers will present Songs of Peace and Thanksgiving, a gala concert and reception in Weill Hall to benefit the Redwood Empire Food Bank. A regional honor choir of high school singers will bring the size of the combined choruses to more than 120 singers.
“I wanted to do an event that will both build community and give back to the community,” Bent said. The program selections reflect a bountiful theme, including Aaron Copland’s beloved “The Tender Land,” and “Ubi Caratas” (Where Charity and Love Are) by Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo.
A food drive organized by choir members is currently underway in the Green Music Center education building. People can drop off canned goods at GMC 1028. For information contact Kathleen Barnes at (805) 791-5659 or
Tickets are $15 general; $12 SSU faculty, alumni and staff; $10 seniors and students. SSU students are admitted free with ID.This event is part of the department's eight-concert Fall Subscription Series in Weill Hall. Weill Hall at Sonoma State University is located at the Green Music Center, near the intersection of Rohnert Park Expressway and Petaluma Hill Road. Parking is available in Lots O and L.
