University, JC Concert Bands to Play in Weill Hall

Andy Collinsworth, conductor

SSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble

Jerome Fleg, conductor

SRJC Symphonic Band

Two concert bands will join forces at Sonoma State University’s Weill Hall for an evening of classic and contemporary music for wind orchestra. The 7:30 p.m. program on May 14 features the SSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the Santa Rosa Junior College Symphonic Band with conductors Andy Collinsworth and Jerome Fleg. The event marks the sixth collaborative concert between the two ensembles. “Our combined concerts highlight the critical connection between the two schools,” Collinsworth said.

Featured trumpet soloist, performing Haydn’s Trumpet concerto, will be Dave Len Scott, studio faculty at Sonoma State. The SSU ensemble will also perform Vincent Persichetti’s Pageant, in honor of the composer’s 100th birthday; Robert Russell Bennett’s Suite of Old American Dances; Carter Pann’s lullaby Hold This Boy and Listen; and British composer Adam Gorb’s Eine Kleine Yiddishe Ragmusik.

The SRJC Symphonic Band has programmed Zdechlik’s Chorale and Shaker Dance; John Mackey’s ballad Sheltering Sky and Samuel Hazo’s Exultate. The ensembles will combine to perform Pines of the Appian Way, the finale to Ottorino Respighi’s epic orchestral work The Pines of Rome.

Tickets are $8 with parking included. Admission is free to all SSU students with ID. For information call 707-664-2324. Weill Hall is located at Sonoma State University’s Green Music Center, near the intersection of Rohnert Park Expressway and Petaluma Hill Road.
