Spring 2016 Audition Information and Material

String, wind, brass, and percussion majors focusing on classical performance and/or music education are required to participate in either the Symphony Orchestra and/or the Symphonic Wind Ensemble at the discretion of the music directors every semester while in residence at SSU.

Music majors and minors will be placed in one or both ensembles at the discretion of the music directors. Non-majors and community members may elect to audition for one or both ensembles.

To Schedule an Audition

Contact either Director of Bands Dr. Andy Collinsworth or
Orchestra Director Dr. Alexander Kahn and we will reply with your audition time. If you are unable to audition during the time slots listed above let us know and we will work to find an alternative time.

When contacting to schedule an audition, please let us know what instrument you play and the best phone number to use to contact you.

The Audition consists of

  • Scales (please prepare one major and one minor scale of your choice)
  • Prepared excerpts (see below)
  • Sight Reading (provided at the audition)

Audition Materials

Audition materials are located on the following pdfs. Please open the appropriate file and scroll down to find and print the music for your instrument. Be careful to print only the pages necessary for your instrument.

Percussionists’ note: There are three separate sets of audition material— tom-tom, timpani and marimba. While a complete audition on all three is preferred, it is acceptable for students to audition in only one or two areas.

Please plan to arrive at least 15 minutes ahead of your scheduled audition time in order to warm up. Practice rooms are open and available in the GMC.
Also, please take steps to carefully prepare for your audition to the best of your ability. You are encouraged to work on the audition material with a private teacher and to listen to recordings of the audition repertoire on youtube or other websites for appropriate tempi, phrasing, etc.
