Internship Description

CPI's Art Therapy Program provides free creative arts activities to underserved students and homeless women and children in Sonoma County. The after school program draws on The Purple Apple curriculum to work on-site after school with small groups of 10-12 students referred by their teachers. The creative arts activities are designed to stimulate self-expression, encourage self-esteem, and improve learning skills that transfer to the classroom.

Job Title: Art Therapy Intern

Compensation: unpaid
Internship Length: 2 semesters minimum
Hours Per Week: 2 hours per site per week

Population: Adults, Children, Multicultural
Focus: Homeless, Education, Mental Health, Art therapy for children with behavioral, mental health, and/or social/emotional challenges in school setting, with homeless individuals, and with children who are residents at low-income sites.
Setting: Community Agency, School, after school program held at schools in Santa Rosa and Rohnert Park as well as a homeless shelter in Santa Rosa and a low-income housing site (Wilford Lane in Rohnert Park).

Duties: Art Therapy Interns assist in weekly art groups in Santa Rosa and Rohnert Park school sites, as well as Burbank housing sites and The Living Room, a Santa Rosa non-profit serving homeless women and children. The main role of this position is supporting the clients to remain on task, helping them stay focused and redirecting unwanted behaviors. Other responsibilities include helping organize activities and clean up after the group.

Qualifications: Art Therapy Interns should be child friendly with some experience working in a child focused setting. Interest in visual arts is a huge plus! Must be able to commit to a confidentiality agreement as well as participation in the full 10 week group. Child Parent Institute requires that all volunteers in children's groups must be fingerprinted (at no cost to the intern). Current TB screening is also required.
