Internship Description

Job Title: Front Desk

Compensation: Unpaid
Internship Length: Negotiable
Hours Per Week: ~ 8 hours/week

Population: Adolescents, Adults, Children, Couples, Family, Multicultural, Seniors
Focus: Crisis Intervention, Domestic Violence, Homeless
Setting: Private, Nonprofit Organization

Program Description: Legal Aid's mission is to promote social justice and advance basic human rights for vulnerable people in our community.

Duties: To assist in answering clients’ legal questions and providing the proper information regarding the types of services that Legal Aid provides and referring them to the proper organization if we are unable to help.  Learn how to use and input client information into the PIKA database, look for conflicts of interest, variety of other tasks associated with the running of the business.

Qualifications: Excellent verbal communication skills, including the ability to relate to diverse client and attorney populations. Demonstrated ability to work well with others. Ability to handle sensitive information and realize that some clients might have any number of physical or mental challenges. While it is not necessary, anyone who is bilingual, or has any previous legal experience is very helpful.

Additional Information: Students who volunteer with Legal Aid of Sonoma County will benefit not only from learning about the legal field but will be able to develop a number of other desirable job skills that are necessary in today's competitive job market. These skills include:

  • Develop the skills to effectively communicate with clients and learn how to build good customer relation skills
  • Learning to use a variety of computer database programs
  • Learn to work within a professional environment; including working regularly scheduled hours, taking responsibility for work-related tasks, etc.
  • How to build and maintain professional contacts
  • Develop the interpersonal skills to work with people of different backgrounds and personalities
