Running with the pack"Running With the Pack" Rohnert Park Fundraiser for Special Olympic Athletes

On Sat., May 1, lace up your walking or running shoes and "run with the pack" for a great cause. The second annual "Running With the Pack" 5K walk/run raises money for Special Olympics Northern California.

Sponsored by Rohnert Park Public Safety, Rohnert Park Chamber of Commerce and Rohnert Park Recreation Department, the walk/run begins at the Rohnert Park Community Center, located at 5401 Snyder Lane (corner of Snyder and Expressway). The 5K route will take runners and walkers through beautiful green mountainsides and along serene creek trails. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the "pack" moves out at 8:30 a.m.

Registered participants will receive a special event t-shirt. Awards will be given to the top three competitors for each age group (13 and younger, 14-18, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70 and older), and trophies will be presented to the top male and female in each age group.

Registration for the event is $25, online and mail-in, or $30 for late registration/day of event registration. To register (or make a general donation), visit the event website. All proceeds will benefit Special Olympics Northern California, which provides year-round sports training and competition opportunities to over 13,000 Northern California athletes with developmental disabilities, completely free of charge to athletes and their families.

English 100 A-B Stretch Program to Replace English 99

Beginning in the 2010-2011 academic year, students who formerly would have scored into English 99 on the basis of their English Placement Test (EPT) results will take English 100A-B, First-Year Composition, a two-semester, graded, credit-bearing reading and writing sequence.

This year-long course, or “Stretch Program, ” was approved by the SSU Academic Senate last spring. The course is termed a “Stretch Program” because it extends the English 101 learning objectives across an entire year, giving students more scaffolded, supported instruction and the benefit of working with the same instructor.

Similar programs are in place at SF State, Sacramento State, CSU Fresno, CSU San Bernardino, CSU Northridge, and CSU Channel Islands and have been proven to increase student engagement and retention. All such programs have won praise from the Office of the Chancellor.

SSU’s English 100A-B sequence focuses on the acquisition of college-level critical reading and expository writing skills. Upon completion of both semesters of the course, students will receive 3 units of Area A2 credit and 3 units of elective credit toward graduation. Enrollments for English 100A-B course sections will be capped at 21 students (16 for those sections taught by students in the English MA Program). The one-semester English 101 course will remain unchanged for students scoring 147 and above on the EPT, and English 99 will no longer be offered.

For questions on the new English 100A-B course sequence, contact Cathy Kroll, Lower Division Composition Coordinator, at 4-2966 or email
