Sonoma State University today announced that JDS Uniphase has committed $1 million over five years toward the establishment of the new master's degree program in computer and engineering science.
The computer and engineering science program, slated to begin in fall 2001, emphasizes the fundamentals of applied physics, applied mathematics, and computer science, and the application of these fields to the design, analysis and synthesis of engineering problem solutions.
"JDS Uniphase has more than 1500 employees in the Santa Rosa community and we feel that it is important to support key educational programs in the area," said Joseph Zils, president of the OCLI Group of JDS Uniphase. "We look forward to actively supporting a high-caliber program such as this that will serve as a pipeline for new hires and a source for career development for our current employees."
The MS-CES curriculum is designed to further the working skills and practical knowledge of engineers, computer scientists and similar professionals. The program emphasizes small class sizes, individual attention, and "hands-on" learning, with many of the required and elective courses having a state-of-the-art laboratory component. The firm base in mathematics, computer science and physics will be augmented with a selection of engineering course options, which will prepare the students for tackling real-world problems. These options include such areas as optics, advanced analog and digital electronics, embedded systems, communications and networking.
"This tremendous gift from JDS Uniphase helps assure that students in the program will be part of a program with the highest caliber equipment and instructors. We couldn't be more pleased at the connection that continues to develop between the high tech businesses in the northbay and the University," said Saeid Rahimi, dean of the School of Natural Sciences. JDS Uniphase is a high-technology company that designs, develops, manufactures and distributes a comprehensive range of products for the growing fiberoptic communications market. These products are deployed by system manufacturers worldwide to develop advanced optical networks for the telecommunications and cable television industries. JDS Uniphase Corporation is traded on the Nasdaq National Market under the symbol JDSU and the exchangeable shares of JDS Uniphase Canada Ltd. are traded on The Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol JDU.
