JUMP's Alternative Spring Break to Catalina Island

JUMP, Join Us Making Progress, is a program of the Associated Students that provides an opportunity for students to participate in various service projects. JUMPís Alternative Spring Break ventures this year to Catalina Island to learn about sustainable living and numerous other issues surrounding the environment.

Thanks to JUMP, a second season of Alternative Spring Break is being planned and a great trip is in the works, for March 24th through April 2nd, 2005. Last year nine SSU students traveled to the Navajo Nation in Arizona. Students described their trip to Arizona as little less than a life changing experience because of the interaction with the Navajo peoples and the service to their community. This year students will travel south to California's own Catalina Island. This environmentally focused trip will feature various projects, as well as educational programs centered around ocean biodiversity, sustainable living, and living in a waste free community. In the midst of their time in Catalina, participants can explore the island, kayak and snorkel.

This exciting and fun educational opportunity for Alternative Spring Break is made possible by JUMP. Applications are now available at the JUMP office and are due Friday, October 22nd by 4:30 p.m. Late applications will be accepted but preference will be given to applications in by the deadline. For more information or an application, stop by the JUMP office on the second floor of the Student Union. You can also get more information by contacting Ali Fredette by e-mail at or by calling 664-4277. Make a difference this spring break and participate in Alternative Spring Break.
