Tell us about Hopscotch
Hopscotch Shoes is a children's store located in the Montgomery Village Shopping Center in Santa Rosa. While we specialize in shoes ranging from sizes Infant to Youth 5, we also offer a carefully curated selection of apparel, accessories, and gifts. Beyond great products, we look to differentiate ourselves by providing amazing service and convenience for our customers.

What do you enjoy most about being an entrepreneur?
While there are many aspects of entrepreneurship that are predictably satisfying (e.g. seeing your creation grow, full ownership of your success and failure, etc.), I have been surprised by how gratifying it is to be an active part of the growth of our employees on both personal and professional levels. I have experience managing people within larger organizations and have certainly taken my role in supporting their growth seriously, but owning the business elevates this feeling of responsibility to another level.

What have been some of our challenges?
Effectively managing our inventory is one of the bigger challenges we face. Every style of shoe we carry requires that we have one or two pairs of each size in stock. If the product is selling well, timely fill in orders are critical. Conversely, if a product isn't selling well we will aggressively discount, but it is often challenging to efficiently liquidate the entire inventory set. Ultimately, our ability to realize profits made from strong sales is highly dependent on our effectiveness in getting under-performers out the door.

How did the EMBA program help you to take this next step in your professional life?
The EMBA program triggered a mental shift for me. The rigor required to complete the program along with everything else that was going on in my life made me realize that I have the ability to do anything. My wife and I bought Hopscotch Shoes just over half way through my time in the program and I'm quite certain we never would have pulled the trigger had this shift not occurred.
