Meet Scott Fairbanks, Business Administration '15

Meet Scott Fairbanks '15. Scott worked for 13 years as a dental hygienist before a life event forced him to change career paths. He knew he wanted to use his knowledge and experience as a dental hygienist to build a career in sales, and subsequently enrolled in the School of Business and Economics at Sonoma State University. scottfairbanks.jpg

Scott graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor's in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. Armed with a new degree, fresh marketing knowledge, and 13 years' experience as a dental hygienist, Scott was an ideal candidate for Johnson & Johnson. He now works as an Oral Care Specialist at Johnson & Johnson, a sales company for hygiene products, medical devices, and pharmaceutical products.

When Scott interviewed with the Pacific District Manager of Johnson & Johnson in Los Angeles, he was told that his accomplishments at Sonoma State University made the difference and made him more competitive than the other candidates who were interviewed. "I would like to thank Dr. Janeen Olsen and other Business Administration professors who have given me the foundation to succeed," Scott Fairbanks, Oral Care Specialist at Johnson & Johnson said.

"Scott's passion and enthusiasm for oral care and sales gave him the motivation he needed to be successful as a first-time college student. The School of Business and Economics provides night classes to support students who have a full-time job," Dr. Janeen Olsen, Professor of Marketing at Sonoma State University said.

The Business Administration program at Sonoma State University offers six concentrations in Accounting, Finance, Financial Management, Management, Marketing, and Wine Business Strategies. All of these concentrations accommodate mid-career students like Scott who have specific career goals in mind.

Scott hopes to be involved in the Mentor Program at Sonoma State University to encourage and help students find their path, especially those who are changing careers in middle age. "I know how it is to doubt oneself and worry about being too old to make a change, but I am proof that it pays to follow your dreams," Scott Fairbanks, Oral Care Specialist at Johnson & Johnson said.
