Blogging allows a department to share unique stories in more depth and detail, and embed photos, video and other media. Blogs can have a set of subscribers who receive emails when you publish a new post. Blog platforms support comments, so departments need to monitor them regularly.

Twitter is the pioneer of 'microblogging', allowing users to post frequent 140 character or less updates to followers. Users can "follow" a department to receive updates and have the option to reply or retweet (share or forward) the message to their own set of followers. The use of keyword 'hashtags' makes tweets searchable to interested users. People use LinkedIn to stay informed about contacts and their industry of interest. YouTube is a video sharing network that uploads content for public viewing. Videos posted on YouTube can be shared on other platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Google+, and embedded in blogs. YouTube also hosts a commenting feature. Sonoma State University has its own YouTube channel. Google+ is a social network that allows more transparency in who you share with and how
you interact. It also integrates all Google services including Gmail, Google
Drive and YouTube with Hangouts video chatting service. Departments that are
particularly interested in search engine optimization (SEO) should consider
using Google+

Instagram is a fun and quirky way to share images and short video. Snap a photo with your mobile device, then choose a filter to transform the image into a memory to keep around forever.
