As with the Exercise 3, please view one of the two videos on Earthquakes and Volcanic eruptions on reserve in the Media Center of Schultz Library, and then answer questions on what you saw. Please turn in a typed or word processed essay, and be sure to check your grammar and spelling. Each student must write his/her own answers to turn in. No Credit will be given for plaigarized or copied papers. DO NOT write your essay on material from the web. You must view the video all the way through.

1. The first video, on earthquakes, is a Nova on "The Day the Earth Shook". Write a short essay of one or two pages in which you answer the following questions and include any other observations you'd like to share.

1. Where did the two earthquakes described in the video occur?

2. When did they occur?

3. What was the magnitude of each quake, on the Richter Scale?

4. What kind of damage occurred with each?

5. How many casualties with each?

6. Most importantly:

What are the major reasons why one earthquake was so much more destructive than the other?

7. What kinds of measures can be taken to minimize this kind of destruction in future earthquakes?


2. As with the earthquake video, view the Nova video, "In the Path of a Killer Volcano," on reserve in the Media Center of the Library and answer the following questions.

 1. Which volcano is the focus of this video? Where is it located? When did it erupt?

 2. What is the difference between an extinct volcano, a dormant volcano, and an active volcano? How long had it been since the volcano in this video last erupted?

 3. How did the scientists figure out what type or types of eruption they should expect? On what evidence did they base their analysis ?

4. What types of evidence did the scientists use to try to predict when the volcano would erupt? Why was such accurate prediction important? What were the different warning stages?

 5. How successful were the scientists in predicting the eruption?

 6. What were the different stages in the eruption? That is, what types of volcanic materials were erupted and in what sequence? What were some longer-term effects of the erupting (weeks, months, possibly years)? How did the typhoon contribute to the effects of the eruption?

 7. Many people in the world live at the base or on the flanks of dormant or potentially active volcanoes. What do you think about this idea?
