Sonoma State University
Language Festival 2007
German Program

Dear German Language Teacher,

You and your students are invited to participate in our Language Festival at Sonoma State University that will take place on Saturday, March 10, 2007, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.! As you may already know, our Sprachfest includes a German language contest in the morning, followed by an entertaining cabaret in the afternoon.  Mark your calendars and begin planning for the Language Festival by preparing your students for either one or both of these exciting events!

The Deutsch-Wettbewerb will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by a ‘brown-bag' (bring your own) lunch with SSU students. After the contest, SSU students will offer a campus tour in German and answer questions about student life at Sonoma State University. The multi-lingual Kabarett at 1:00 p.m. is expected to be the highlight of the day, since it has been very entertaining in the past.  In fact, a few years ago our student clubs, who organize this event, won a campus-wide award for "Best Student Club Sponsored Event." Students, teachers, and members from the community are invited to showcase their cabaret-type skills in dance, music, or singing in a fun and non-competitive atmosphere.

To be eligible to participate in the Deutsch-Wettbewerb, students must be enrolled in a German class at a public or private middle school or high school in the SSU region. In the contest, students will compete at two levels:

-- Level 1: students currently enrolled in a first-year or second-year German class

-- Level 2: students currently enrolled in a third-year German class or beyond (i.e. AP class, Honors Class)

The Deutsch-Wettbewerb will consist of two parts: (1) skits, and (2) poetry recitals.  Encourage your students to participate in one or the other activity. Those students who prefer not to participate in the competition, are invited to display their talents in the cabaret! You may want to give your students extra credit for participating in the Language Festival. Remind them that their participation looks good on college and scholarship applications! You may also want to make sure that your school is aware of your students' participation and that you get the same publicity and recognition that school athletes get for extramural games (make it part of the morning announcement).

My colleagues in French and Spanish and I very much look forward to welcoming you and your students at the German Language Contest and the Language Festival Cabaret on March 10!  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. I look forward to your email or telephone call.

Viele Grüße und alles Gute--bis hoffentlich bald!
