Personal Profile


A native of Colombia, South America, Jorge E. Porras first came to this country in 1971 with a B.A. in Hispanic language and literature from the Pedagogical and Technological University of Colombia (UPTC-Tunja). After receiving his Master's in Romance linguistics from The Ohio State University (OSU-Columbus, OH), he returned to his country where he taught Spanish for native speaker at UPTC university for seven years. Later, he came back to the United States and earned a Ph.D. from UT-Austin in Hispanic linguistics in 1984. He has since taught in several institutions of Higher Education including OSU Columbus and The University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Dr. Porras has published extensively and is fully committed to scholarly activities and effective teaching. Professor Porras is always ready to help students in and out of his office. He has been teaching Lower and Upper Division language courses at SSU for twelve years now and presently serves as Coordinator of the Spanish Program.
