April Events

April 23, 2015.  PICASSO AND THE BAD BOYS OF MONTMARTRE by DR. ANNE PRAH-PEROCHON. In the spring of 1904, a young, penniless Pablo Picasso, lured by Montmartre’s underground culture -- and cheap living -- moved into a sort of artists' commune there, Le Bateau Lavoir. Picasso's presence was a magnet for budding artists Juan Gris, Braque, Modigliani, Matisse, and poets Guillaume Apollinaire and Max Jacob. This lecture will present those larger-than-life characters, and will focus not only on their creations, but also their passions and their pranks, and will visit their favorite haunts. Dr. Prah-Pérochon’s lectures are always among our most popular and wellattended events. We hope you will join us on April 23.  7 PM, Vista del Lago. www.afsantarosa.org for details.

At the same time, with a remarkably light touch, it gestures toward the tensions within a multicultural society. Bristling with humanity, it was one of the best films at Cannes last year and is sure to resonate with anyone who has entered or will enter the foreboding job market!  8-10:15PM, 188 Dwinelle Hall, UC Berkeley.

April 24, 2015.  DANJUMA & ONOLA, plus AFRICOMBO at Ashkenaz.  African and Caribbean dance beats fill the night in this double bill with AfriCombo taking its African-Haitian roots and updating them, followed by Danjuma & Onola mixing Afrobeat, Highlife, and other West African styles with reggae (African-style, of course).  Santa Cruz-based Danjuma & Onola  turn every show into a dance party filled with high energy Afrobeat/funk and world dance music, mixing in soukous and Afro-reggae. Danjuma Adamu and his band are Putumayo recording artists. As a musician, Danjuma is a product of his African upbringing, but as he explains, as a music-mad kid growing up in the early 1960s in Lagos, Nigeria, he wasn't much different from similar kids in Dallas or Sacramento. "We would buy a Beatles record," says Danjuma, singing the opening guitar riff of "I Feel Fine," "and we would sit around, six of us, 10 of us. And we would learn all the parts on that album, until that record got scratched and couldn't be played any more." The band is Danjuma on vocals, guitar, and percussion; percussionist-drummer-singer Renato Annicchiarico; Ibou Ngom on the djembe drum and sabar; bassist Etienne Franc; and singer-dancer-mbira player Piwai WekuHarare. Guest musicians often include saxophonist Shay Salhov and guitarist Daniel Thomas.  Lilting, infectious Afro-Haitian dance rhythms are the foundation of every concert by AfriCombo. The band brings together veterans of various local reggae, Haitian, soukous, and Afrobeat bands, mixing rhythms and styles from the African diaspora with an emphasis on the Caribbean. Lyrically, they sing of revolution, love, and freedom, inspired by the dreams of Bob Marley, Nelson Mandela, Toussaint L'Ouverture, and Mahatma Gandhi. The band is led by Mr. G, the Haitian-born co-founder of Kalbass Kreyol.  Doors at 8:30 pm; Show at 9:00 pm; $12 advance / $15 day of show.  www.ashkenaz.com

Winner of a 2009 North Bay Music Award, the Flames appeared on Ashkenaz's 30th Anniversary CD and have shared stages with most of the greats of the style at dances and festivals up and down the West Coast. They include songs from their recent, seventh album of searing Louisiana zydeco music, "Fire Dance," and their best dance tunes from the past.  Ashkenaz is a special place to the Zydeco Flames. "It's one of the first three places we played when we got together in 1990," says guitarist Frank Bohan. It all began when accordion player Bruce Gordon teamed up with singer-rubboard player Lloyd Meadows to play at parties, including the premiere of the essential documentary film on Cajun and zydeco music, "J'ai ete au Bal." Soon they expanded to a full band - with electric guitarist Bohan, bassist-singer Timm Walker, and drummer William Allums Jr. - carrying on in the tradition of Clifton Chenier, Buckwheat Zydeco, and Queen Ida. The Flames have performed at just about every important event in the Bay Area, from the Black and White Ball to the San Francisco Jazz Festival, as well as countless Louisiana, Cajun, and zydeco fests. Five of their songs are featured in the computer game "The Sims Unleashed."  Doors at 7:30 pm; Cajun/Zydeco dance lesson at 8:00 pm; Show at 9:00 pm. $15/$10 students.  www.ashkenaz.com

When not globetrotting - last summer the band traveled from San Francisco (Yerba Buena Gardens) to Venice and Istanbul - they hold court here almost monthly, playing Rigney's own tunes and their usual high-energy mix of Louisiana Cajun, zydeco, New Orleans R&B, and down-home blues favorites. Some songs are pulled from the recent CD/DVD recorded at the Harris Center for the Arts in Folsom, "Swamp Fever - Live at Three Stages," whose video will be part of the upcoming PBS-TV summer music series, "Music Gone Public" (www.musicgonepublic.com). Featured songs range from "Iko Iko" to "Orange Blossom Special" and "C'est la Vie."  What sets Rigney and Flambeau apart is Rigney's fresh musical takes on Cajun and zydeco, and other styles he loves to play from rock to classical, creating a celebration of life through dance rhythms. Flambeau is a tight ensemble of virtuoso musicians, with guitarist Danny Caron (Charles Brown's bandleader; he and Rigney met when both backed up Rockin' Sidney in the '80s), boogie-woogie keyboardist Caroline Dahl, bassist and singer Steve Parks, and drummer Brent Rampone.  Doors at 7:30 pm; Cajun/Zydeco dance lesson with Diana Castillo at 8:00 pm; Show at 8:30 pm$12. 1317 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley. 8:30 pm (dance lesson at 8:00). www.ashkenaz.com for details.

September 19, 2015-January 10, 2016.  BREGUET:  ART AND INNOVATION IN WATCHMAKINGBreguet: Art and Innovation in Watchmaking explores the history of the watch and clock maker Breguet. The company’s cutting-edge innovations transformed the nature of personal timekeeping, and the exhibition will include displays describing the technology that earned Abraham-Louis Breguet his sobriquet as “the father of modern horology.”  From its beginnings in Paris in 1775, Breguet advanced great technical developments such as the self-winding watch, the first wristwatch, the repeating mechanism, and, most notably, the tourbillon—a revolutionary movement that neutralizes the negative effects of gravity on pocket watches. Breguet played a key role in the history of watchmaking, elevating the craft to its zenith by producing finely made watches that were a pleasure to handle and use.  The company's reputation for ingenuity, as well as the reliability and portability of its watches, led to Breguet’s watches being considered objects of great prestige, worn by the powerful and elite in Europe, including Napoleon Bonaparte, Tsar Alexander I, and Queen Victoria. The most famous Breguet timepiece linked to a European monarch is the world-renowned “Marie-Antoinette” pocket watch. This extraordinary piece took 44 years to make and was the most complicated watch of its time. During the 19th century, Breguet expanded its business into countries beyond France, supplying elegant timepieces to customers in Europe, Russia, and the United States. Today Breguet is a name known throughout the world.  Organized by Martin Chapman, curator in charge of European decorative arts and sculpture, this presentation at the Legion of Honor features more than 80 objects. A scholarly catalogue will be published by the Fine Arts Museums to coincide with the exhibition.  ROSEKRANS GALLERY, SPECIAL EXHIBITION GALLERIES 20B-C https://legionofhonor.famsf.org/exhibitions/breguet

On-going. WHY NOT MAKE IT BEAUTIFUL? FRENCH TRAVEL POSTERS, 1945-1949, presented by the Nevada State Museum. French travel posters given to Nevada in 1949 in gratitude for American support following World War II will make their debut at the Nevada State Museum beginning May 23. Commissioned and printed by the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français, the French National Railways, the 21 posters depict stunning French landscapes, historical provinces and cultural regions. Why Not Make it Beautiful? French Travel Posters 1945-1949 features artwork carried aboard the Merci Boxcar, or Gratitude Train, in February of 1949. Research indicates that all states received a set of posters, yet only three appear to have retained possession of their collection, and Nevada will be the only state to exhibit them. Staff from the Nevada State Museum and Nevada State Archives restored the posters for the exhibit generously sponsored by Hazel Woodgate and the John and Grace Naumann Foundation. In 1947 the American people collected 700 boxcars loaded with food, clothing and fuel to help the people of France who were struggling desperately to recover from World War II. This "Friendship Train" stopped in Reno to collect the food gathered from all across the state of Nevada. In 1949 the French people collected a trainload of gifts for the Americans, filling 49 boxcars with tokens and treasures from the French provinces, one for each state and one to be shared between Hawaii and Washington D.C. The existence of these trains, and a time when international friendship was on a citizen-to-citizen scale is nearly forgotten. Most Nevadans have little knowledge of this chapter in our history. The notes and the significance of the gifts represent the best of humanity; the kindness that humans can give and share in the face of great suffering, the deep connection possible across cultural and spatial boundaries. FLORENCE DE BRETAGNE. Florence de Bretagne is a French painter and photographer. Her work is full of joy and very colorful. It has always something to do with new life : imaginary plants that are flourishing, blossoms, seeds. It seems that nature is new and beautiful like new-born babies. She took abstract pictures of fruits and vegetables (a very poetic book, "Semence", is still available), she made paintings on trees and imaginary plants, and many others. You can see her work either in the SFMOMA gallery at Fort Mason, or in her atelier (756 Garland Drive in Palo Alto), or else on her website : http://www.florencedebretagne.com

CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPES OF SOUTHERN FRANCE, by ANDREA WEDELL.  Expat Andrea Wedell, originally from the Bay Area and living in France for the past 24 years, would love for you to visit her painting : contemporary landscapes of Southern France. She works with texture and vibrant, bold color that is built up in multiple layers and glazed on. Her landscapes are semi-abstract to abstract poetic interpretations of her environment in Cassis, or bits  and pieces of it as she sees and feels it– from lively, magical gardens with their sweet smells , to turquoise and deep orange underwater scenes, pink and bright white cliffs built up over millions of years, villages that have retained their authentic charm, sparkling ocean and wide expanses of sky. You can see her work virtually on her website :   www.gallerywedell.com If you sign up on the blog, you will receive monthly posts, a journal of art and life in the South of France. www.gallerywedell.com/blog

April 29-June 27, 2015.  LE FRANÇAIS "RÉVOLUTIONNÉ"  (1789-1914), taught by RENEE MOREL at The French Class. Wednesday mornings (10:30 AM-12:00 NOON). 8 weeks (April 29-June 17, 2015).  $255 (discounts available for members and early birds). $35 for single classes (drop-ins). May 2, 2015.

May 3, 2015. FRENCH LITERATURE MEETUP GROUP, 3-5pm.  The group will discuss PAROLES, by JACQUES PREVERT. Place : Le Bateau Ivre, 2629 Telegraph Ave., Berkeley. For more information, contact : Charlie Klein, chassac@sbcglobal.net tel. (510) 530-5078, or go to http://www.meetup.com/The-French-Literature-Meetup-Group.

July 5, 2015.  FRENCH LITERATURE MEETUP GROUP, 3-5pm. The group will discuss LES CONTES DU CHAT PERCHÉ by MARCEL AYMÉ. Place : Place: Crepes on Cole, 100 Carl Street, San Francisco.  For more information, contact : Charlie Klein, chassac@sbcglobal.net tel. (510) 530-5078, or go to http://www.meetup.com/The-French-Literature-Meetup-Group.
