March 26, 2016.  CAFÉ MUSÉE EVENT:  THE AESTHETIC THEATER OF FRANZ VON STUCK (1863-1928).?  Franz von Stuck (1863–1928), a German Symbolist and Expressionist painter, as well as sculptor, engraver, and architect, was born near Passau, in Bavaria. He relocated to Munich at the age of fifteen to pursue an art education, later attending the Munich Academy (1881-1885). The young artist first produced cartoons for satirical journals and vignettes for posters and bookplates. At age 26, he switched to painting, winning a gold medal at the Munich Glass Palace for his Guardian of Paradise. In 1892, he co-founded the avant-garde group “Munich Secession,” and made his first sculpture, Athlete. Mostly drawing its inspiration from biblical and mythological themes, Stuck’s work (The SinLustVice) regularly involved seductive female nudes, muscular males, and a sultry atmosphere. In 1897, Stuck, a teacher at the Munich Academy (Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky were his students) married Mary Lindpaintner, an American widow, regal in stature, who became his muse and model. That same year, the egocentric artist started work on his imposing residence, the lavish “Villa Stuck”—now a museum—designing everything: layout, interior decorations, furniture…  See how Franz von Stuck’s constant dialogue with the new medium of photography was essential not only to his masterful œuvre, but also to his being the director of his own elaborate mise-en-scène. Discover the full-scale aesthetic theater where the acclaimed and socially influential artist invariably took center stage.  Superb slides, scrumptious brunch and stimulating exchanges! IN FRENCH. Come practice your French and meet others!  Organized by our great Café Musée team and presented by Renée Morel.  Donation: $5.?  The presentation will start at 10:00 AM, but come at 9:30 AM if you want to have breakfast and socialize en français.? (IMPORTANT: Even though the description is in English, the presentation will be en français!)  The Café Musée is an officially recognized CCSF club whose activities are partially funded by the Associated Student Union ($100 per semester). Our previous presentations, “Lovis Corinth (1858-1925): Between Impressionism and Expressionism” and “James Tissot (1836-1902): From Profane to Sacred Art” were extremely popular. March 29, 2016.   CZ & THE BON VIVANTS perform Cajun/Zydeco  at Ashkenaz.  A hot band of Cajun/zydeco veterans, CZ & THE BON VIVANTS dish out classic Cajun dance tunes and originals. Along with singer and fiddler Catherine Matovich (whose day job is playing with symphony orchestras), the Bon Vivants are Lake Charles, Louisiana, native and East Bay great Andrew Carriere on accordion, guitarist Jim Scott, bassist Elaine Herrick, and drummer Timothy Orr. Over the last few years they've appeared frequently on the festival and outdoor event circuit - from downtown Oakland to the Solano Stroll, the Kaiser Rooftop concert series to Bay cruises - and at many a Bay Area dance hall. And India may be the next stop. The band's CD, "Good to the Bon," has been used as a tool for teaching world music at the American School in New Delhi; CZ has an international fan base as a result.  The group was born when Matovich got home after playing in Neil Diamond's touring band and saw a concert by Cajun/zydeco fiddler Tom Rigney. "I loved working big shows, but seeing Tom's band made me want to be in a group like that, that had so much fun playing together." The Bon Vivants came together to play a benefit concert in 2004, "and we've been busy ever since," Matovich says. Nobody could agree on a group name, so eventually they were dubbed the Cajun Babes (after the Dixie Chicks), and through democratic process came up with the current group moniker, although there is no CZ. Just high-energy Cajun and zydeco music.  Doors at 7:30 pm; Cajun/Zydeco dance lesson with Cheryl McBride at 8:00 pm; Show at 8:30 pm.  $12.  www.ashkenaz.com

ART

Through May 2, 2016.  SYLVIE SEREX-BONNET presents her paintings at Lireille Gallery, 2980 Piedmont Ave., Oakland.  510.547.3455 or www.lireille.com for details.

Through May 15, 2016.  PIERRE BONNARD:  PAINTING ARCADIA.  Pierre Bonnard: Painting Arcadia is the first major international presentation of Pierre Bonnard’s work to be mounted on the West Coast in half a century. The exhibition will feature more than sixty works that span the artist’s complete career, from his early Nabi masterpieces, through his experimental photography, to the late interior scenes for which he is best known.  The exhibition celebrates Bonnard (French, 1867–1947) as one of the defining figures of modernism in the transitional period between Impressionism and abstraction. Several themes from Bonnard’s career will emerge, including the artist’s great decorative commissions where the natural world merges with the bright colors and light of the South of France, where windows link interior and exterior spaces, and where intimate scenes disclose unexpected phantasmagorical effects.  Among the many significant paintings on view will be Man and Woman (1900, Musée d’Orsay), in which the artist has depicted his lifelong companion and one of his constant subjects, Marthe de Méligny. Also featured will be such masterpieces as The Boxer (Self-Portrait) (1931, Musée d’Orsay) and The Work Table (1926–1937, National Gallery of Art); and decorative panels and screens, including View from Le Cannet (1927, Musée Bonnard) and Pleasure (1906–1910, Musée d’Orsay).  Pierre Bonnard: Painting Arcadia will offer a fresh interpretation of Bonnard's repertoire, and a reconsideration of the artist as one of the foremost practitioners of modernism.  http://legionofhonor.famsf.org/exhibitions/pierre-bonnard-painting-arcadia

Through August 14, 2016.  THE ALLURE OF ART NOUVEAU:  1890-1914.  Art Nouveau captivated urban centers in Europe and North America beginning in the 1890s. The style permeated everything from graphic arts to architecture, interior design, and decorative arts. A number of characteristics define the style: a reverence for nature with an emphasis on organic designs; the use of “whiplash” curvilinear lines; and a seemingly limitless portrayal of the female form, with artists depicting women as ethereal, sensual nymphs. Motifs were interpreted in both realistic and stylized fashions. – San Francisco International Airport, Departures, Level 3, Pre-Security.  See more at: http://www.flysfo.com/museum/exhibitions/allure-art-nouveau-1890%E2%80%931914#sthash.C8S0SkEc.dpuf

On-going. WHY NOT MAKE IT BEAUTIFUL? FRENCH TRAVEL POSTERS, 1945-1949, presented by the Nevada State Museum. French travel posters given to Nevada in 1949 in gratitude for American support following World War II will make their debut at the Nevada State Museum beginning May 23. Commissioned and printed by the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français, the French National Railways, the 21 posters depict stunning French landscapes, historical provinces and cultural regions. Why Not Make it Beautiful? French Travel Posters 1945-1949 features artwork carried aboard the Merci Boxcar, or Gratitude Train, in February of 1949. Research indicates that all states received a set of posters, yet only three appear to have retained possession of their collection, and Nevada will be the only state to exhibit them. Staff from the Nevada State Museum and Nevada State Archives restored the posters for the exhibit generously sponsored by Hazel Woodgate and the John and Grace Naumann Foundation. In 1947 the American people collected 700 boxcars loaded with food, clothing and fuel to help the people of France who were struggling desperately to recover from World War II. This "Friendship Train" stopped in Reno to collect the food gathered from all across the state of Nevada. In 1949 the French people collected a trainload of gifts for the Americans, filling 49 boxcars with tokens and treasures from the French provinces, one for each state and one to be shared between Hawaii and Washington D.C. The existence of these trains, and a time when international friendship was on a citizen-to-citizen scale is nearly forgotten. Most Nevadans have little knowledge of this chapter in our history. The notes and the significance of the gifts represent the best of humanity; the kindness that humans can give and share in the face of great suffering, the deep connection possible across cultural and spatial boundaries. Nevada State Museum/Bretzlaff History Resource Center Hours: 8:30 to 4:30 Wed. - Sat. by appointment 775/687-4810, x240 or SueAnn.Monteleone@nevadaculture.org or http://museums.nevadaculture.org/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=431

FLORENCE DE BRETAGNE. Florence de Bretagne is a French painter and photographer. Her work is full of joy and very colorful. It has always something to do with new life : imaginary plants that are flourishing, blossoms, seeds. It seems that nature is new and beautiful like new-born babies. She took abstract pictures of fruits and vegetables (a very poetic book, "Semence", is still available), she made paintings on trees and imaginary plants, and many others. You can see her work either in the SFMOMA gallery at Fort Mason, or in her atelier (756 Garland Drive in Palo Alto), or else on her website : http://www.florencedebretagne.com

CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPES OF SOUTHERN FRANCE, by ANDREA WEDELL.  Expat Andrea Wedell, originally from the Bay Area and living in France for the past 24 years, would love for you to visit her painting : contemporary landscapes of Southern France. She works with texture and vibrant, bold color that is built up in multiple layers and glazed on. Her landscapes are semi-abstract to abstract poetic interpretations of her environment in Cassis, or bits  and pieces of it as she sees and feels it– from lively, magical gardens with their sweet smells , to turquoise and deep orange underwater scenes, pink and bright white cliffs built up over millions of years, villages that have retained their authentic charm, sparkling ocean and wide expanses of sky. You can see her work virtually on her website :   www.gallerywedell.com If you sign up on the blog, you will receive monthly posts, a journal of art and life in the South of France. www.gallerywedell.com/blog

FRENCH AS YOU LIKE IT.  French As You Like It offers private French lessons and cultural coaching in Paris for professionals, expats, tourists, students, and children. We believe in giving the highest standard of customer service and our values are:  Quality - Experienced French teachers who are fluent in English, are from Paris and have university degrees in teaching French as a second language.  Flexibility-  Our teachers are available between 8am and 8pm at clients homes, at unique cultural places in Paris, at client offices or at our classroom facility in the Marais.   Innovation - Highly customized private French lessons that are proven to speed French speaking and written abilities during stays in Paris.  Our founder, Marguerite Monnier started French As You Like It in 2006 after returning to France from San Francisco. She wanted to use her experience of moving to the U.S. and then back to France to help Anglophones settling and visiting Paris. French As You Like It now has seven teachers and has worked with over 500 students here in Paris.  At French As You Like It, we consider Paris our classroom. We believe people learn faster and easier if they are engaging the language through topics and locations that interest them. Each of our students has a personalized program based on their needs and level. For working professionals, we also come to offices, but again design a program around the student’s interests. For a history buff, the teacher might review irregular verbs while discussing the French revolution.  While we do use grammar books and give homework, our students have fun learning French because they are engaged by an activity or subject that interests them.  Our fees range from 45 euros to 75 euros per hour depending on your requirement, situation and program and more information about us can be found on our website www.frenchasyoulikeit.com and on our facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/French-As-You-Like-It/115835031825132

April 1 & 3, 2016.  MANDABI at the SONOMA FILM INSTITUTE.  Ousmane Sembene’s second feature was the first African film to receive international recognition. “MANDABI is a folk-comedy with satirical overtones, and with all of the rich visions for the spectator to behold, there are deep observations of character involved. The story concerns Dieng, a middle-aged Moslem, his two wives, and their seven children. One day he receives a money order from his nephew in Paris, with specific instructions about its division. However, news of the money order soon spreads throughout the entire neighborhood... The very unpretentiousness of MANDABI fills one with great optimism about the future of African cinema.” – Albert Johnson, Pacific Film Archive The film received the International Critics' Prize at the Venice Film Festival. TROIS BOIS performs works by ANTOINE BUSNOIS, JOSEPH CANTELOUBE, GEORGES MIGOT, JACQUES IBERT and more as part of SAN FRANCISCO FRIENDS OF CHAMBER MUSIC's return to San Francisco’s Legion of Honor with a monthly series of weekend concerts titled Legion Listening Series. Now in its seventh season, the Legion Listening Series is a collaborative partnership between SFFCM and the Legion of Honor presenting period-specific concerts that highlight the museum’s special exhibitions. Curated by Dominique Pelletey, SFFCM's Executive Director and resident Frenchman, performing ensembles are asked to create programming that is inspired by the Legion's current exhibit, thus bringing together the visual and performing arts in a public setting to stimulate the imagination and enhance the experience of visitors at the museum. All concerts take place in the Rodin Gallery and are free with purchase of admission to the museum. This year we are pleased to announce that the Legion's latest exhibition will be brought to life by Bay Area ensembles starting February 6, 2016, as the museum opens a new exhibit by renowned French modernist painter Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) in a U.S. exclusive show entitled Pierre Bonnard: Painting Arcadia. Featuring 75 works, the exhibition is the first major international presentation of the artist’s work to be mounted on the West Coast in half a century and an in-depth examination that reconsiders Bonnard as one of the foremost practitioners of modernism in the transitional period between Impressionism and abstraction. Several themes from Bonnard’s career will emerge, including the artist’s great decorative commissions where the natural world merges with the bright colors and light of the South of France, where windows link interior and exterior spaces, and where intimate scenes disclose unexpected phantasmagorical effects.  Legion Listening Series.  12 noon - 1:30pm.  Palace of the Legion of Honor, 100 34th Ave., San Francisco, 94121.  Free parking is available around the fountain in front of the museum or along El Camino del Mar.  http://sffcm.org/index.php?id=658 for details.

April 14, 2016.  ROBERT DOINEAU:  L’ALSACE APRES LA GUERRE (1945), presented by RENEE MOREL.  In 1939, the young Robert Doisneau (1912-1994), newly hired by the Rapho photographic agency, took his first professional street images. Drafted into the French army as both a soldier and a photographer after the outbreak of the war, Doisneau was stationed in Alsace in subzero temperatures, waiting anxiously for the enemy until being demobilized for health reasons. He never saw the annexation of that province into Hitler’s greater German Reich and spent the rest of the war forging passports and identification papers for the French Resistance. In the summer of 1945, Doisneau, aged 33, returned to Alsace and took pictures for a project that never materialized. His subdued images do not show picturesque fairy-tale villages nor do they document the savage obliteration of vineyards, valleys and hamlets. Instead they offer us the daily activities of people slowly rebuilding their life after the war: public pride in both their national and provincial identities, private sorrows and quiet heroism. Come and and see these moving, melancholy or buoyant photos, discovered only after Doisneau’s death, among some 450,000 negatives archived in his  Montrouge studio, and recently made public by his two daughters.  Presented IN FRENCH by CCSF instructor Renée Morel and followed by a Q&A session.  Free and open to all. Open seating (first come, first served). NO reservation necessary. Have a sweater handy as sometimes the ventilation system lowers the room temperature, bring your own coffee and your own cushion if you wish, and pleasepleasecome on time. Latecomers will be guillotined.  Downtown Campus, Thurs., April 14, 2016, 6:30-8:30 PM.

April 15 & 17, 2016.  IN THE SHADOW OF WOMEN at the SONOMA FILM INSTITUTE.  “The new film by the great Philippe Garrel is a close look at infidelity—not merely the fact of it, but the particular, divergent ways in which it’s experienced and understood by men and women. Stanislas Merhar and Clotilde Courau are Pierre and Manon, a married couple working in fragile harmony on Pierre’s documentary film projects, the latest of which is a portrait of a resistance fighter (Jean Pommier). When Pierre takes a lover (Lena Paugam), he feels entitled to do so, and he treats both wife and mistress with disengagement bordering on disdain; when Manon catches Pierre in the act, her immediate response is to find common ground with her husband. Garrel is an artist of intimacies and emotional ecologies, and with IN THE SHAOW OF WOMEN he has added narrative intricacy and intrigue to his toolbox. The result is an exquisite jewel of a film.” -New York Film Festival (2015, 73 min., in French w/English subtitles) Warren Auditorium, Sonoma State University, 1801 E. Cotati Ave., Rohnert Park.  www.sonoma.edu/sfi/ for details.
