June Events

June 9, 2016.  TOUS LES MATINS DU MONDE.  Alain Corneau’s fictional account of eminent musician Marin Marais is set, with a keen attention to historical period, in the France of Louis XIV. Marais reflects on his earlier life, when he tried to become a pupil of composer and violist Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe; actors Gérard Depardieu and Guillaume Depardieu are cast as the aging Marais and his younger self. Throughout the film, we hear viol music from the period performed by Jordi Savall, who received a César for his performance. – 2PM.  Pacific Film Archive, Berkeley.  See more at: http://www.bampfa.berkeley.edu/event/tous-les-matins-du-monde

June 9, 2016.  CORO CICONIA presents LOVE WRIT LARGE:  MEDIEVAL MANNERS OF REVERENCE – A SECULAR CONTEXT FOR MACHAUT’S GREAT MASS.  Together we delve hungrily into disparate aspects of admiration. The sacred dance O Virgo splendens embodies trancelike veneration; in Ciconia’s exuberant O Padua, the shining star is a fervently admired city. Several songs from Machaut’s Remède de Fortune depict shameless giddiness, dutiful devotion, and fervent gratitude, while his wretchedly beautiful rondeau Puis qu’en oubli broaches the misery of rejection. We find profound compassion for the besmirched in the Fortuna desperata of Busnois and its intricate homage by Agricola; our shared grief at the loss of Machaut, declared in the Armes, amours of Andrieu, is comfortless but resigned. Why not the Messe de Nostre Dame as centerpiece? Machaut’s remarkable and inimitable work, by far the earliest known setting of the complete Ordinary, offers in its adoration of the divine an expressive range perhaps never exceeded.  Members’ Lounge, Berkeley City Club, 2315 Durant Ave., Berkeley.  Tickets available at the door.  Suggested donation, $20 general, $15 senior, $10 studentshttp://www.berkeleyfestival.org/coro-ciconia/

June  11, 2016. CARA BLACK discusses MURDER ON THE QUAI, the latest Aimée Leduc investigation set in Paris. The world knows Aimée Leduc, heroine of 15 mysteries in the NYTimes bestselling series, as a tres chic investigator - the toughest and most relentless in Paris. In November 1989 Aimee Leduc is in her first year of college at Paris's preeminent medical school. She lives in a 17th-century apartment that overlooks the Seine with her father, who runs the family detective agency. But the week the Berlin Wall crumbles, so does Aimee's life as she knows it. First, someone has sabotaged her lab work, putting her at risk of failing out of the program. Then, she finds out her aristo boyfriend is planning to get engaged to another woman. And finally, Aimee's father takes off to Berlin on a mysterious errand. He asks Aimee to help out at the detective agency while he's gone-as if she doesn't already have enough to do. But the case Aimee finds herself investigating-a murder linked to a transport truck of Nazi gold that disappeared in the French countryside during the height of World War II-has gotten under her skin. Her heart may not lie in medicine after all-maybe it's time to think harder about the family. June 18, 2016.  TOM RIGNEY & FLAMBEAU playy Cajun/Zydeco/Blues at Ashkenaz.  He may have been crowned Emperor of the 2011 Sacramento Jazz Jubilee, but violinist-fiddler-composer and singer Tom Rigney  and his band Flambeau have always been royalty at Ashkenaz. When not globetrotting - last year they covered ground from Alaska to Alviso Slough to a Caribbean New Year's cruise - they hold court here almost monthly, playing Rigney's own tunes and their usual high-energy mix of Louisiana Cajun, zydeco, New Orleans R&B, and down-home blues favorites. Some songs are pulled from the recent CD/DVD recorded at the Harris Center for the Arts in Folsom, "Swamp Fever - Live at Three Stages," whose video was part of the 2015 PBS series "Music Gone Public" (www.musicgonepublic.com). Featured songs range from "Iko Iko" to "Orange Blossom Special" and "C'est la Vie."  What sets Rigney and Flambeau apart is Rigney's fresh musical takes on Cajun and zydeco, and other styles he loves to play from rock to classical, creating a celebration of life through dance rhythms. Flambeau is a tight ensemble of virtuoso musicians, with guitarist Danny Caron (Charles Brown's bandleader; he and Rigney met when both backed up Rockin' Sidney in the '80s), boogie-woogie keyboard player Caroline Dahl, bassist and singer Steve Parks, and drummer Brent Rampone.  Doors at 7:30 pm; Cajun/Zydeco dance lesson with Diana Castillo at 8:00 pm; Show at 9:00 pm.  $15/$10 students.  1317 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley. 9:00 pm (dance lesson at 8:00).  www.ashkenaz.com

June 19, 2016.  AFRICAN GUITAR SUMMIT AT ASHKENAZ.  The award-winning all-star band African Guitar Summit gathers some of Africa's most distinctive and best-known guitarists in a full band setting. African Guitar Summit is actually several solo stars and bandleaders supporting each other in this group: GUINEA-born singer-guitarist Alpha Yaya Diallo, MADAGASCAR guitarists Donné Roberts and Madagascar Slim, and Ghana-born drummer Kofi Ackah, along with electric bass and balafon (African marimba) played by GUINEA's Naby Camara.  The band grew out of a one-time recording project where the musicians (all of whom had moved to Canada for different reasons) got together, rehearsed for several days, sharing songs and stories, then staged a concert for CBC's On Stage radio program in Toronto. An album's worth of music from that show was released in 2004. The CD, "African Guitar Summit," won a Juno award (Canada's Grammy) for best world music recording. A second CD was also nominated for a Juno in 2007. Individually, members have racked up nearly a dozen Juno awards. Since then the group has occasionally reformed and done Canadian tours. This is its Ashkenaz debut.  Alpha Yaya Diallo was born in Guinea, spent time in Senegal where members of his family live, and developed a self-taught, unique guitar style. Moving to Europe in the '80s to work with Peter Gabriel and later settling in Vancouver, British Columbia, he quickly became one of the best-known African stars on the world music circuit, leading his own bands and recording award-winning solo albums. Donné Roberts is a distinctive guitarist from Madagascar who sings most of his original songs in Malagasy. He lived for a time in Moscow, where he was the first black host on MTV Russia, before moving to Toronto. Three-time Juno award-winner Madagascar Slim (born Randriamananjara Radofa Besata Jean Long) digs into more folk and blues roots in his guitar playing. Ghana-born Kofi Ackah keeps with the beat (actually many different rhythms from throughout Africa) with an array of drums, traditional and modern. Naby Camara is a balafon master and griot from Guinea originally, who continues the history of his people through his music.  Doors at 6:30 pm; Show at 7:00 pm.  $20/$18 advance.  www.ashkenaz.com

FRANCOFONIA.  Russian filmmaker Alexander Sokurov, who swept us through the Hermitage Museum in Russian Ark, now shifts his focus to Paris and the Louvre, particularly during World War II, when museum director Jacques Jaujard had to negotiate with Franz Graf Wolff-Metternich, representing the German occupation forces. Combining dramatic recreations with documentary footage, Sokurov also brings life to some of the paintings’ subjects, including a pompous Napoleon and the beautiful Marianne, the French goddess of liberty. Narrating throughout, Sokurov creates a stunning essay-meditation on history, demonstrating his conviction that museums are the veritable DNA of a civilization. The style permeated everything from graphic arts to architecture, interior design, and decorative arts. A number of characteristics define the style: a reverence for nature with an emphasis on organic designs; the use of “whiplash” curvilinear lines; and a seemingly limitless portrayal of the female form, with artists depicting women as ethereal, sensual nymphs. Motifs were interpreted in both realistic and stylized fashions. – San Francisco International Airport, Departures, Level 3, Pre-Security.  See more at: http://www.flysfo.com/museum/exhibitions/allure-art-nouveau-1890%E2%80%931914#sthash.C8S0SkEc.dpuf

On-going. WHY NOT MAKE IT BEAUTIFUL? FRENCH TRAVEL POSTERS, 1945-1949, presented by the Nevada State Museum. French travel posters given to Nevada in 1949 in gratitude for American support following World War II will make their debut at the Nevada State Museum beginning May 23. Commissioned and printed by the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français, the French National Railways, the 21 posters depict stunning French landscapes, historical provinces and cultural regions. Why Not Make it Beautiful? French Travel Posters 1945-1949 features artwork carried aboard the Merci Boxcar, or Gratitude Train, in February of 1949. Research indicates that all states received a set of posters, yet only three appear to have retained possession of their collection, and Nevada will be the only state to exhibit them. Staff from the Nevada State Museum and Nevada State Archives restored the posters for the exhibit generously sponsored by Hazel Woodgate and the John and Grace Naumann Foundation. In 1947 the American people collected 700 boxcars loaded with food, clothing and fuel to help the people of France who were struggling desperately to recover from World War II. This "Friendship Train" stopped in Reno to collect the food gathered from all across the state of Nevada. In 1949 the French people collected a trainload of gifts for the Americans, filling 49 boxcars with tokens and treasures from the French provinces, one for each state and one to be shared between Hawaii and Washington D.C. The existence of these trains, and a time when international friendship was on a citizen-to-citizen scale is nearly forgotten. Most Nevadans have little knowledge of this chapter in our history. The notes and the significance of the gifts represent the best of humanity; the kindness that humans can give and share in the face of great suffering, the deep connection possible across cultural and spatial boundaries. Nevada State Museum/Bretzlaff History Resource Center Hours: 8:30 to 4:30 Wed. - Sat. by appointment 775/687-4810, x240 or SueAnn.Monteleone@nevadaculture.org or http://museums.nevadaculture.org/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=431

This exhibition brings together the works of some of the finest Surrealist poets and artists, whose collaborations produced both luxurious and outrageous artist’s books.  California Palace of the Legion of Honor, Lincoln Park, 34th & Clement, San Francisco http://legionofhonor.famsf.org/

FLORENCE DE BRETAGNE. Florence de Bretagne is a French painter and photographer. Her work is full of joy and very colorful. It has always something to do with new life : imaginary plants that are flourishing, blossoms, seeds. It seems that nature is new and beautiful like new-born babies. She took abstract pictures of fruits and vegetables (a very poetic book, "Semence", is still available), she made paintings on trees and imaginary plants, and many others. You can see her work either in the SFMOMA gallery at Fort Mason, or in her atelier (756 Garland Drive in Palo Alto), or else on her website : http://www.florencedebretagne.com

CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPES OF SOUTHERN FRANCE, by ANDREA WEDELL.  Expat Andrea Wedell, originally from the Bay Area and living in France for the past 24 years, would love for you to visit her painting : contemporary landscapes of Southern France. She works with texture and vibrant, bold color that is built up in multiple layers and glazed on. Her landscapes are semi-abstract to abstract poetic interpretations of her environment in Cassis, or bits  and pieces of it as she sees and feels it– from lively, magical gardens with their sweet smells , to turquoise and deep orange underwater scenes, pink and bright white cliffs built up over millions of years, villages that have retained their authentic charm, sparkling ocean and wide expanses of sky. You can see her work virtually on her website :   www.gallerywedell.com If you sign up on the blog, you will receive monthly posts, a journal of art and life in the South of France. www.gallerywedell.com/blog

SOCIAL STUDIES IN FRENCH.  This Fall, in addition to French classes, EFBA (French Education in the Bay Area) is opening a new social studies class in French at Kensington Hilltop Elementary for students in 4th, 5th and 6th grade, every Friday afternoon from 3:30 to 5:00. The goal of this program is to give the children the opportunity to discover the richness of France through its history, while giving them a critical, objective and spatial look on contemporary events. We will address transverse themes in the students' knowledge acquired in the California curriculum that we could put in perspective to expose the children to another knowledge about France and Europe (XVIII-XX centuries) We want to deal with the great history (characters, events, paintings, etc.) but also with the small one (people: children, women, colors, animals, comics etc.). For more information, please visit our website:  http://www.efba.us/social-studies-presentation

FRENCH AS YOU LIKE IT.  French As You Like It offers private French lessons and cultural coaching in Paris for professionals, expats, tourists, students, and children. We believe in giving the highest standard of customer service and our values are:  Quality - Experienced French teachers who are fluent in English, are from Paris and have university degrees in teaching French as a second language.  Flexibility-  Our teachers are available between 8am and 8pm at clients homes, at unique cultural places in Paris, at client offices or at our classroom facility in the Marais.   Innovation - Highly customized private French lessons that are proven to speed French speaking and written abilities during stays in Paris.  Our founder, Marguerite Monnier started French As You Like It in 2006 after returning to France from San Francisco. She wanted to use her experience of moving to the U.S. and then back to France to help Anglophones settling and visiting Paris. French As You Like It now has seven teachers and has worked with over 500 students here in Paris.  At French As You Like It, we consider Paris our classroom. We believe people learn faster and easier if they are engaging the language through topics and locations that interest them. Each of our students has a personalized program based on their needs and level. For working professionals, we also come to offices, but again design a program around the student’s interests. For a history buff, the teacher might review irregular verbs while discussing the French revolution.  While we do use grammar books and give homework, our students have fun learning French because they are engaged by an activity or subject that interests them.  Our fees range from 45 euros to 75 euros per hour depending on your requirement, situation and program and more information about us can be found on our website www.frenchasyoulikeit.com and on our facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/French-As-You-Like-It/115835031825132

July 3, 2016.  FRENCH LITERATURE MEET-UP GROUP reads LE MISANTHROPE, de MOLIERE.  We are a group of people who love French literature and love to discuss it, mostly in French but discussion in English is also possible. The group contains a mixture of native francophones and advanced students of French. We meet every two months starting with January, on the first Sunday of the month, alternating between Berkeley and San Francisco. We choose the reading selections for the year by a democratic member nomination and voting process. Go to www.meetup.com/The-French-Literature-Meetup-Group to join. It’s free! . . 3-5pm.  Place : Crepes on Cole, 100 Carl Street, San Francisco. Her heart may not lie in medicine after all-maybe it's time to think harder about the family Now we dip back in time to reveal how Aimée first became a detective in this prequel called ‘Transcendently, seductively, irresistibly French’ by Alan Furst.
