July 14, 2016.  AWA SANGHO, the GOLDEN VOICE OF MALI, performs at Ashkenaz.  Called "the golden voice of Mali," singer-songwriter-dancer and percussionist AWA SANGHO makes her Ashkenaz and California debut backed by her full band performing her socially conscious songs that percolate with the rhythms and resonance of Africa. After singing with African musical greats including Salif Keita and Ali Farka Touré, and the pioneering all-woman group Les Go de Koteba that she co-founded, Sangho left Mali in 2011 to move to New York City to commit to her own creative life.  The original songs on Sangho's popular 2014 solo debut recording "Ala Ta Ye Tougnaye" ("The Truth Belongs to God") represent her "Afropolitan" experience of leaving Africa but never leaving it behind. The title song, "Ala Ta," is the theme for the documentary film "The Same Heart." Her songs, mostly sung in Bambara, draw upon all of Songho's rich life experiences. Her lyrics communicate reverence for the people who have touched her life, controversial aspects of culture, and message music directed to the youth. Singing and playing percussion, Sangho is accompanied by percussionist-bandleader Daniel Moreno, kora (African harp) player Yacouba Sissoko, guitarist Gustavo Dantes, bassist Fred Doumbe, and drummer Abou Diarrasuba.  Born in Mali's capital Bamako in 1972, Awa Sangho was raised in the desert north of Mali, where her stunning voice was first recognized and celebrated. She is a descendent of two great empires, the Songhai of Dire and the Mande, or Malinke, of Kayes. Her family name, Sangho, indicates that she comes from the Mabo, griots - musical historians - of the Songhai. Griots are charged with honoring the histories of families in their region. Her mother is a Kouyate - a Mande griot - and her earliest memories include watching her mother sing at weddings and naming ceremonies.  As a child, Sangho showed clear musical talent, singing everything she heard - children's songs, Songhai, Mande, and Bambara numbers that were played on the radio, even blues, which has a special resonance in northern Mali, as evidenced by the career of one of her great musical mentors, Grammy-winning guitar maestro Ali Farka Touré. Sangho sang, danced, acted, and began to travel the world with the acclaimed Ensemble Koteba and Les Go de Koteba. She is working on her second album.  Doors at 8:00 pm; Show at 8:30 pm$18/$15 advance.  www.ashkenaz.com

July 14-August 28, 2016.  HITCHCOCK-TRUFFAUT SERIES at Pacific Film Archive.  The release of Kent Jones’s excellent new documentary  HITCHCOCK/ TRUFFAUT provides the perfect occasion to revisit a selection of films by both iconic directors. The film is based on the book  of the same title , a compendium of interviews that the young François Truffaut conducted with Hitchcock in 1962. Since its publication in 1966, Hitchcock/Truffaut has become indispensable to generations of film writers, aspiring directors, and cinephiles everywhere. By the time he met Truffaut, Hitchcock had had a long and prolific career directing dozens of films from the silent era onward, often completing one or more films a year, many of them box-office hits. Yet it wasn’t until Truffaut and his colleagues at the magazine Cahiers du Cinéma wrote about them in the 1950s that the movies of Hitchcock and his Hollywood cohort—John Ford, Howard Hawks, and others—began to be viewed not just as products of an entertainment industry but as art, a new and largely unexamined art equal to the novels, paintings, and plays of previous generations. They went on to explore and elucidate this new medium, learning as much as they could from cinema’s pioneers and using what they gleaned in their own films; the Cinémathèque française was their university and the streets of Paris their sound stage. This series allows us to look at the films of master and student side by side and appreciate how they changed the way we look at movies today.  http://bampfa.berkeley.edu/program/hitchcocktruffaut for details.

They include songs from their recent, seventh album of searing Louisiana zydeco music, "Fire Dance," and their best dance tunes from the past.  Ashkenaz is a special place to the Zydeco Flames. "It's one of the first three places we played when we got together in 1990," says guitarist Frank Bohan. It all began when accordion player Bruce Gordon teamed up with singer-rubboard player Lloyd Meadows to play at parties, including the premiere of the essential documentary film on Cajun and zydeco music, "J'ai ete au Bal." Soon they expanded to a full band - with electric guitarist Bohan, bassist-singer Timm Walker, and drummer William Allums Jr. - carrying on in the tradition of Clifton Chenier, Buckwheat Zydeco, and Queen Ida. The Flames have performed at just about every important event in the Bay Area, from the Black and White Ball to the San Francisco Jazz Festival, as well as countless Louisiana, Cajun, and zydeco fests. July 19, 2016.  TERRANCE SIMIEN & THE ZYDECO EXPERIENCE play at Ashkenaz.  Considering that it seems that all the Louisiana Cajun and zydeco greats have visited Ashkenaz, here's a surprise: multiple Grammy Award-winning zydeco accordionist and bandleader Terrance Simien  makes his Ashkenaz dance night debut (he also offers a family show on July 17) with his band the Zydeco Experience. Songs come from throughout his career, including the band's latest Grammy winning album, "Dockside Sessions," which includes their versions of songs by Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead and Toots & the Maytals. Simien and his band have toured internationally, presenting over 7.000 live performances in more than 40 countries, and released dozens of solo recordings and collaborations.  Born in 1965, Simien is an eighth-generation Creole from one of the earliest Creole families documented to have settled in the Mallet area of St. Landry Parish of Louisiana. He was introduced to music via the piano at home, the Catholic Church choir, and in school band programs where he played trumpet. While in his teens, he taught himself to play accordion and formed his first band, Terrance Simien & the Mallet Playboys, and began to play the regional zydeco club and church hall circuit. He quickly found large audiences for his version of zydeco.  In 1985, on the way to making "Graceland," Paul Simon met Simien and sang background vocals on Simien's single, "You Used to Call Me."  Since then Simien has racked up an impressive list of credits for putting zydeco accordion into mainstream settings, on the soundtracks to "The Big Easy," Disney's "The Princes and the Frog," and other films.  Doors at 7:30 pm; Cajun/Zydeco dance lesson with Diana Castillo at 8:00 pm; Show at 8:30 pm$20/$17 advance.  www.ashkenaz.com

Through August 14, 2016.  THE ALLURE OF ART NOUVEAU:  1890-1914.  Art Nouveau captivated urban centers in Europe and North America beginning in the 1890s. The style permeated everything from graphic arts to architecture, interior design, and decorative arts. A number of characteristics define the style: a reverence for nature with an emphasis on organic designs; the use of “whiplash” curvilinear lines; and a seemingly limitless portrayal of the female form, with artists depicting women as ethereal, sensual nymphs. Motifs were interpreted in both realistic and stylized fashions. – San Francisco International Airport, Departures, Level 3, Pre-Security.  See more at: http://www.flysfo.com/museum/exhibitions/allure-art-nouveau-1890%E2%80%931914#sthash.C8S0SkEc.dpuf

On-going. WHY NOT MAKE IT BEAUTIFUL? FRENCH TRAVEL POSTERS, 1945-1949, presented by the Nevada State Museum. French travel posters given to Nevada in 1949 in gratitude for American support following World War II will make their debut at the Nevada State Museum beginning May 23. Commissioned and printed by the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français, the French National Railways, the 21 posters depict stunning French landscapes, historical provinces and cultural regions. Why Not Make it Beautiful? French Travel Posters 1945-1949 features artwork carried aboard the Merci Boxcar, or Gratitude Train, in February of 1949. Research indicates that all states received a set of posters, yet only three appear to have retained possession of their collection, and Nevada will be the only state to exhibit them. Staff from the Nevada State Museum and Nevada State Archives restored the posters for the exhibit generously sponsored by Hazel Woodgate and the John and Grace Naumann Foundation. In 1947 the American people collected 700 boxcars loaded with food, clothing and fuel to help the people of France who were struggling desperately to recover from World War II. This "Friendship Train" stopped in Reno to collect the food gathered from all across the state of Nevada. In 1949 the French people collected a trainload of gifts for the Americans, filling 49 boxcars with tokens and treasures from the French provinces, one for each state and one to be shared between Hawaii and Washington D.C. The existence of these trains, and a time when international friendship was on a citizen-to-citizen scale is nearly forgotten. Most Nevadans have little knowledge of this chapter in our history. The notes and the significance of the gifts represent the best of humanity; the kindness that humans can give and share in the face of great suffering, the deep connection possible across cultural and spatial boundaries. Nevada State Museum/Bretzlaff History Resource Center Hours: 8:30 to 4:30 Wed. - Sat. by appointment 775/687-4810, x240 or SueAnn.Monteleone@nevadaculture.org or http://museums.nevadaculture.org/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=431

FLORENCE DE BRETAGNE. Florence de Bretagne is a French painter and photographer. Her work is full of joy and very colorful. It has always something to do with new life : imaginary plants that are flourishing, blossoms, seeds. It seems that nature is new and beautiful like new-born babies. She took abstract pictures of fruits and vegetables (a very poetic book, "Semence", is still available), she made paintings on trees and imaginary plants, and many others. You can see her work either in the SFMOMA gallery at Fort Mason, or in her atelier (756 Garland Drive in Palo Alto), or else on her website : http://www.florencedebretagne.com

CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPES OF SOUTHERN FRANCE, by ANDREA WEDELL.  Expat Andrea Wedell, originally from the Bay Area and living in France for the past 24 years, would love for you to visit her painting : contemporary landscapes of Southern France. She works with texture and vibrant, bold color that is built up in multiple layers and glazed on. Her landscapes are semi-abstract to abstract poetic interpretations of her environment in Cassis, or bits  and pieces of it as she sees and feels it– from lively, magical gardens with their sweet smells , to turquoise and deep orange underwater scenes, pink and bright white cliffs built up over millions of years, villages that have retained their authentic charm, sparkling ocean and wide expanses of sky. You can see her work virtually on her website :   www.gallerywedell.com If you sign up on the blog, you will receive monthly posts, a journal of art and life in the South of France. www.gallerywedell.com/blog

FRENCH AS YOU LIKE IT.  French As You Like It offers private French lessons and cultural coaching in Paris for professionals, expats, tourists, students, and children. We believe in giving the highest standard of customer service and our values are:  Quality - Experienced French teachers who are fluent in English, are from Paris and have university degrees in teaching French as a second language.  Flexibility-  Our teachers are available between 8am and 8pm at clients homes, at unique cultural places in Paris, at client offices or at our classroom facility in the Marais.   Innovation - Highly customized private French lessons that are proven to speed French speaking and written abilities during stays in Paris.  Our founder, Marguerite Monnier started French As You Like It in 2006 after returning to France from San Francisco. She wanted to use her experience of moving to the U.S. and then back to France to help Anglophones settling and visiting Paris. French As You Like It now has seven teachers and has worked with over 500 students here in Paris.  At French As You Like It, we consider Paris our classroom. We believe people learn faster and easier if they are engaging the language through topics and locations that interest them. Each of our students has a personalized program based on their needs and level. For working professionals, we also come to offices, but again design a program around the student’s interests. For a history buff, the teacher might review irregular verbs while discussing the French revolution.  While we do use grammar books and give homework, our students have fun learning French because they are engaged by an activity or subject that interests them.  Our fees range from 45 euros to 75 euros per hour depending on your requirement, situation and program and more information about us can be found on our website www.frenchasyoulikeit.com and on our facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/French-As-You-Like-It/115835031825132
