November 2, 2018.  L’ATALANTE by JEAN VIGO will be screened at PACIFIC FILM ARCHIVE.  (Jean Vigo, 1934, 4K Digital Restoration).  Vigo’s only full-length feature is a poetic masterpiece on the theme of passionate love, following a young barge captain and his peasant bride in their first days together. “One of the most magical of French masterpieces” (Variety).  7pm. https://bampfa.org/

November 2 or 4, 2018.  EVE’S BAYOU at SONOMA FILM INSTITUTE.  Sex, lies, and voodoo: this scintillating family drama—steeped in Creole folklore, magic, and mysticism—is one of the most distinctive films of the 1990s. “Black female writer-director Kasi Lemmons made her feature directorial debut with this period family drama set in the South. Depicting the African American experience with a female slant, Lemmons shunned the usual urban violence and race issues of Black films for a different approach, a jambalaya of Southern gentility, bayou traditions, and voodoo visions. The Southern Gothic saga pivots around a prosperous Creole family in Louisiana during the year 1962 — as seen through the eyes of intensely curious, precocious, and perceptive ten-year-old Eve Batiste (Jurnee Smollett).” — Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University With Samuel Jackson and Lynn Whitfield. November 2-23, 2018.  JEAN VIGO REGAINED at PACIFIC FILM ARCHIVE.  Jean Vigo was twelve when his father, Miguel Almereyda, a left-wing journalist, died in prison. Inheriting his father’s anarchic spirit, Vigo selected cinema as his means for pointed, poetic social critique. The resourceful, playful, and spontaneous Vigo joined forces with cinematographer Boris Kaufman to realize his innovative vision. Kaufman commented, “He used everything around him: the sun, the moon, snow, night. Instead of fighting unfavorable conditions, he made them play a part.” But Vigo’s exceptional films proved too radical for his time. His first fiction film, Zero for Conduct, was censored and not shown publicly until 1945, and Vigo succumbed to tuberculosis shortly after his exquisite love story L’Atalante was re-edited, retitled, and encumbered with a new soundtrack in an attempt to make it more marketable. The persistence of Vigo’s legacy, despite the suppression and mutilation of his works, is a testament to the genius of these films, which presaged the poetic realism of the 1930s and Italian neorealism of the 1940s and inspired the French New Wave.  https://bampfa.org/program/jean-vigo-regained

November 3, 2018.  CAFÉ MUSEE EVENT:  JOAQUIN SOROLLA (1863-1923): THE TRIUMPH OF LIGHT AND COLOR, a presentation by RENEE MOREL. (IMPORTANT: Even though the description is in English, the presentation will be en français!)  Orphaned at the age of two—his parents died in an outbreak of cholera in Valencia, Spain—Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923) trained at his local School of Fine Arts, gradually incorporating stylistic trends from Naturalism, Impressionism and the new photographic perspective when he went to Paris. In 1906, Sorolla opened his first solo exhibition at the Georges Petit Gallery—dealer to accomplished geniuses such as Claude Monet and Auguste Rodin. It was a resounding success for this Spanish landscape and portrait painter. Subsequent shows in both Europe and the United States firmly established his reputation as one the great cosmopolitan naturalist painters, on a par with John Singer Sargent, Anders Zorn, and James Abbott McNeill Whistler.  Sorolla’s most typical works are dexterous representations of fishermen at work or bathers at play under the bright sky of his native land, surrounded by sunlit water. A French critic wrote: “Not Turner, not Monet, painted so directly blinding shafts of sunlight as has this Spaniard.” Colorful and brightly luminous, Sorolla’s work easily stood out in the melancholy Parisian Salons, “so abundant in tiresome grisailles.” Very much a family man, Sorolla made exquisite intimate portraits of his loved ones, but he also excelled at images of elegant people in fashionable seaside resorts. The bravura of his loose, brilliant brush strokes is present in all. Come and see the powerful and resplendent views of Mediterranean Spain by Sorolla, both a worthy heir to Velázquez and a major contributor to the development of modern art in Europe.  Also: Sad news: The Café Musée, a CCSF club for twenty years, is no longer supported by the Downtown Associated Students Council since that campus no longer has an ASC. November 6, 2018.  LE CERCLE LITTERAIRE DE L’ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE DE SANTA ROSA lit LE MEDECIN MALGRE LUI de Molière. 3:30pm.  Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, dit Molière, né à Paris, baptisé le 15 janvier 1622 et mort à Paris le 17 février 1673, est un dramaturge auteur de comédies, mais aussi un comédien et chef de troupe de théâtre français qui s'est illustré au début du règne de Louis XIV. « Le médecin malgré lui » (1666). Comédie en prose, en trois actes. Divertissante parodie des pratiques des médecins de l´époque. Le jargon pédantesque, les diagnostiques tautologiques, les lapalissades, les remèdes farfelus, font les délices du spectateur. November 6, 8 or 10, 2018.  THE “CÉLESTES”: CHINESE LABORERS IN WWI FRANCE.  During WWI, France recruited large numbers of Chinese laborers to fill the manpower shortage caused by casualties. Driven by poverty, young men, mostly from the Shandong province, toiled in fields, farms, and factories to free the troops for front line duty. Packed like cattle in the cargo hold of freighters for a long and perilous journey, many never even made it to France. Once in the war-torn Somme area, the “Célestes”—as they were soon dubbed—were not allowed out of camp to fraternize locally. Hired as non-military labor, they nevertheless died from German artillery shells due to the camps’ proximity to the front line. They were also used to recover the bodies of soldiers or to clear mines. Men fell ill from malnutrition, harsh weather, and working conditions; they suffered from acute depression, became insane. See the vital part played by Célestes, these forgotten heroes of the Great War, and how some 3,000 of them stayed on to form the first French “Chinatowns.”  $25. November 8, 2018.  VERNISSAGE / ART OPENING for the works of MADAME MARIE.  Collection privée de Catherine Marie de 139 dessins originaux du XIXème siècle qui sont l'oeuvre de Joseph Le Dieu, avocat avranchinais « esprit distingué et ami des beaux arts, dessinateur et paysagiste habile »,membre de la société d'archéologie,sciences et arts.  Les dessins présentés réalisés au crayon, proviennent de 2 carnets dont chaque feuille porte une date et un nom de lieu.  C'est une véritable promenade dans la moitié sud du département de la Manche ,du Coutançais à l'Avranchin,que l'on peut entamer sur les pas du dessinateur en suivant les itinéraires d' un artiste travaillant sur le motif,que l'on aperçoit au détour d'un dessin,contemplant un paysage ou en train de le croquer.  Le premier carnet concerne les années 1845 à 1848 et le second 1873 à 1876.  D'un carnet à l'autre,trente années séparent donc les deux séries de dessins.Si l'artiste a acquis entre les deux périodes une parfaite maîtrise de la technique du crayon,en particulier dans le rendu de la végétation et des frondaisons,ses promenades sont restées les mêmes.  Un troisième carnet présente des études à l'encre de chine:personnages,marines, scènes de plage,enfin animaux de ferme.  Le regard attentif et observateur de Joseph Le Dieu,au delà de la recherche du pittoresque et de l'approche romantique de son époque,rend ainsi compte de cette société provinciale,rurale et littorale sur laquelle il existe fort peu de documentation. November 9, 2018.  STEPHANIE SOLINAS speaks about THE DOMINIQUE LAMBERT PROJECT:  AN ARTIST’S EXPLORATION OF THE FIGURE OF THE OTHER AND IDENTITY.  Stéphanie Solinas will be delivering a lecture with The Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California.  What can you know about a person’s identity based on their name? Or based on their answers to a list of questions about what they identify with? What would such a person look like? Through November 11, 2018.  NOVATO THEATRE COMPANY presents GOD OF CARNAGE.  "'God of Carnage' (originally in French 'Le Dieu du carnage') by YASMINA REZA is the second play of Novato Theater Company’s 2018/2019 season. "It is about two sets of parents, one of whose child has hurt the other at a public park. The parents agree to meet to discuss the matter in a civilized manner. However, as the evening goes on, they become increasingly childish, resulting in the evening devolving into chaos. Originally written in French, the play was a success. It has since been translated into English, and has enjoyed equal acclaim in both London and New York.  Director Terry McGovern: 'The reason I’m excited to be directing this play is because it’s a brilliantly written, comedic look at parenting adolescent boys, all of whom do crazy things. November 15, 2018.  CINE-TRACTS screens at PACIFIC FILM ARCHIVE in Berkeley.  France, 1968: Amid nationwide strikes and the student uprising in the Latin Quarter, a collective of filmmakers—including Jean-Luc Godard, Jackie Raynal, Alain Resnais, Philippe Garrel, and painter Gérard Fromanger—teamed up to make a series of silent tracts, each length determined by the availability of affordable lengths of film. On average, each tract used 100 feet of film, evening out to two minutes and forty-seven seconds. The majority of these were edited in-camera and printed in Brussels—where film processing plants were not on strike—then brought back to France, intended to be screened mid-occupation in both the academy and the factory. While the tracts have been shown few times outside their moment of inception, they represent a groundswell of formal creativity, a fervid moment of impossible juxtapositions: between still and moving images, words and actions, between the Communist Party and the New Left, or indeed between Godard’s own cult of personality and his newfound militancy. November 16, 2018.  THE FRENCH CINE-CLUB of the ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE DE LA SILICON VALLEY screens CE QUI NOUS LIE / BACK TO BURGUNDY (Cédric Klapisch, 2017).  It is an ode to beautiful terroir, wine-making, family legacy with sibling rivalry, as well as the added value or problem of expatriation and bilingualism.   Three siblings reunite at their home in Burgundy to save the family vineyard in a tale of a new generation finding its own unique blend.  As four seasons and two harvests go by, they have to learn to reinvent their relationship and trust in each other as they work to preserve the land that ties them together.  The bilingual introduction of the film and the discussion will be led by Hélène Laroche Davis, professor of Film Studies.  We will welcome Le Beaujolais Nouveau 2018 with wine and small bites before the screening.  7:00 PM PST.  Emerson School, 2800 W. November 17, 2018.  SOLEIL O (Mauritania, 1970) screens at PACIFIC FILM ARCHIVE in Berkeley.  Soleil Ô, which takes its title from a West Indies song about the pain of Africans enslaved in the Caribbean, is a powerful depiction of immigrant experience, focused on a laborer who moves to Paris from West Africa in hopes of a better life. Instead he encounters a new iteration of slavery, postcolonial style—unemployment, institutional indifference, police hostility, and entrenched racism. Yet, how can we put fundamental values and rights at the core of technology and foster responsible innovation?  This fall, swissnex invites you to take an “ethical pause” to consider the implications of science and technology in the public sphere. CE QUI NOUS LIE / BACK TO BURGUNDY (Cédric Klapisch, 2017) at the THE FRENCH CINE-CLUB of the ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE DE LA SILICON VALLEY.  It is an ode to beautiful terroir, wine-making, family legacy with sibling rivalry, as well as the added value or problem of expatriation and bilingualism.   Three siblings reunite at their home in Burgundy to save the family vineyard in a tale of a new generation finding its own unique blend.  As four seasons and two harvests go by, they have to learn to reinvent their relationship and trust in each other as they work to preserve the land that ties them together.  The bilingual introduction of the film and the discussion will be led by Hélène Laroche Davis, professor of Film Studies.  We will welcome Le Beaujolais Nouveau 2018 with wine and small bites before the screening.  7:00 PM PST.  Emerson School, 2800 W. CINE-TRACTS screens at PACIFIC FILM ARCHIVE in Berkeley.  France, 1968: Amid nationwide strikes and the student uprising in the Latin Quarter, a collective of filmmakers—including Jean-Luc Godard, Jackie Raynal, Alain Resnais, Philippe Garrel, and painter Gérard Fromanger—teamed up to make a series of silent tracts, each length determined by the availability of affordable lengths of film. On average, each tract used 100 feet of film, evening out to two minutes and forty-seven seconds. The majority of these were edited in-camera and printed in Brussels—where film processing plants were not on strike—then brought back to France, intended to be screened mid-occupation in both the academy and the factory. While the tracts have been shown few times outside their moment of inception, they represent a groundswell of formal creativity, a fervid moment of impossible juxtapositions: between still and moving images, words and actions, between the Communist Party and the New Left, or indeed between Godard’s own cult of personality and his newfound militancy. EVE’S BAYOU at SONOMA FILM INSTITUTE.  Sex, lies, and voodoo: this scintillating family drama—steeped in Creole folklore, magic, and mysticism—is one of the most distinctive films of the 1990s. “Black female writer-director Kasi Lemmons made her feature directorial debut with this period family drama set in the South. Depicting the African American experience with a female slant, Lemmons shunned the usual urban violence and race issues of Black films for a different approach, a jambalaya of Southern gentility, bayou traditions, and voodoo visions. The Southern Gothic saga pivots around a prosperous Creole family in Louisiana during the year 1962 — as seen through the eyes of intensely curious, precocious, and perceptive ten-year-old Eve Batiste (Jurnee Smollett).” — Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University With Samuel Jackson and Lynn Whitfield. JEAN VIGO REGAINED at PACIFIC FILM ARCHIVE.  Jean Vigo was twelve when his father, Miguel Almereyda, a left-wing journalist, died in prison. Inheriting his father’s anarchic spirit, Vigo selected cinema as his means for pointed, poetic social critique. The resourceful, playful, and spontaneous Vigo joined forces with cinematographer Boris Kaufman to realize his innovative vision. Kaufman commented, “He used everything around him: the sun, the moon, snow, night. Instead of fighting unfavorable conditions, he made them play a part.” But Vigo’s exceptional films proved too radical for his time. His first fiction film, Zero for Conduct, was censored and not shown publicly until 1945, and Vigo succumbed to tuberculosis shortly after his exquisite love story L’Atalante was re-edited, retitled, and encumbered with a new soundtrack in an attempt to make it more marketable. The persistence of Vigo’s legacy, despite the suppression and mutilation of his works, is a testament to the genius of these films, which presaged the poetic realism of the 1930s and Italian neorealism of the 1940s and inspired the French New Wave.  https://bampfa.org/program/jean-vigo-regained November 2-23, 2018.

SOLEIL O (Mauritania, 1970) screens at PACIFIC FILM ARCHIVE in Berkeley.  Soleil Ô, which takes its title from a West Indies song about the pain of Africans enslaved in the Caribbean, is a powerful depiction of immigrant experience, focused on a laborer who moves to Paris from West Africa in hopes of a better life. Instead he encounters a new iteration of slavery, postcolonial style—unemployment, institutional indifference, police hostility, and entrenched racism. Called “the eye of Paris” by his friend Henry Miller, Brassaï’s work both celebrates and reveals the complexities and hidden sides of French society and culture.  This thematic survey of his career focuses on his celebrated depictions of 1930s Paris, where he photographed lovers, prostitutes, workers, and gatherings in cafés, bars, and dance halls with an intimate candor that’s still striking today. Through December 16, 2018.  OLD MASTERS IN A NEW LIGHT:  REDISCOVERING THE EUROPEAN COLLECTION.  Since 1872, the University of California, Berkeley has been collecting works by European artists, building a collection that includes many rare and exceptional works distinguished by artistic innovation, emotional and psychological depth, and technical virtuosity. Consisting mostly of gifts from professors, alumni, and other supporters, the collection continues to evolve, representing artistic influences and connections among many European countries, from the fourteenth century to the dawn of the modern era.  Recently, BAMPFA has worked with scholars and experts from around the world to determine more accurate attributions for a number of these works, a process that has resulted, in one instance, in the discovery that a work by a previously unidentified artist is actually a significant painting by the fourteenth-century Venetian master Paolo Veneziano. We have also undertaken efforts to clean, conserve, and reframe numerous paintings representing the breadth and quality of the collection. Through January 6, 2019.  NEW WORK: ETEL ADNAN.  Born in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1925, visual artist, poet, and essayist Etel Adnan writes what must be communicated through language, and paints what cannot. While her earliest paintings favored pure abstraction, she is perhaps best known for her landscape works inspired by her long obsession with Mount Tamalpais. Adnan’s recent works once again return to abstraction, most specifically, color and its possibilities. A student of philosophy, Adnan came to Berkeley in 1955. As an active participant in Ann O’Hanlon’s Perception Workshops in Mill Valley in the 1960s, she developed her practice in dialogue with poets, experimental musicians, playwrights, and SFMOMA, at its original location in the War Memorial Veteran’s Building. This artist, poet, researcher, and inventor created an original pictographic alphabet as a way to borrow from, yet subvert, the medium of his French colonizers. Apple and Google will continue to bring us data solutions and new objects of desire. Emerging technologies in artificial intelligence, data collection embedded in threads and new production methods are currently being applied to the apparel industry while weaving and tapestry are making a strong come back as an art practice of the 21st century. Contemporary artists always continue to find ways to turn the technologies of the future back into art that subverts their intent.  It is fascinating to think that Jacquard created a punched wooden card capable of producing a repeated pattern in textile and that 150 years later it was a punched paper card that sparked the first computer. On-going. WHY NOT MAKE IT BEAUTIFUL? FRENCH TRAVEL POSTERS, 1945-1949, presented by the Nevada State Museum. French travel posters given to Nevada in 1949 in gratitude for American support following World War II will make their debut at the Nevada State Museum beginning May 23. Commissioned and printed by the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français, the French National Railways, the 21 posters depict stunning French landscapes, historical provinces and cultural regions. Why Not Make it Beautiful? French Travel Posters 1945-1949 features artwork carried aboard the Merci Boxcar, or Gratitude Train, in February of 1949. Research indicates that all states received a set of posters, yet only three appear to have retained possession of their collection, and Nevada will be the only state to exhibit them. Staff from the Nevada State Museum and Nevada State Archives restored the posters for the exhibit generously sponsored by Hazel Woodgate and the John and Grace Naumann Foundation. In 1947 the American people collected 700 boxcars loaded with food, clothing and fuel to help the people of France who were struggling desperately to recover from World War II. This "Friendship Train" stopped in Reno to collect the food gathered from all across the state of Nevada. In 1949 the French people collected a trainload of gifts for the Americans, filling 49 boxcars with tokens and treasures from the French provinces, one for each state and one to be shared between Hawaii and Washington D.C. The existence of these trains, and a time when international friendship was on a citizen-to-citizen scale is nearly forgotten. Most Nevadans have little knowledge of this chapter in our history. The notes and the significance of the gifts represent the best of humanity; the kindness that humans can give and share in the face of great suffering, the deep connection possible across cultural and spatial boundaries. FLORENCE DE BRETAGNE. Florence de Bretagne is a French painter and photographer. Her work is full of joy and very colorful.
