(January 2016) UC-DAVIS SURVEY OF STEM PROFESSIONALS:  Dear science and technology professionals:  We write to ask for your participation in a brief, anonymous survey about the career paths of science and technology professionals in the United States.  By sharing your experience you will advance research about how the professional achievements of French nationals, and European-Americans, in STEM vary by country of origin, gender and immigrant status.  Since there are fewer French (or European) ex-pats working in STEM professions in the U.S. (compared to Indian or Chinese nationals) we want to make sure your experiences are included.  To compare across groups, we need to hear from both immigrant and U.S.-born residents. That's why we're asking for your participation. We hope our results will inform employment-based visa policy.  This study has been approved by UC Davis’ Institutional Review Board. Participation in the survey is completely voluntary. Your answers will be anonymous and will be combined with other respondents' answers.  The survey takes 10-15 minutes to complete.  Survey  Link: https://ucdavisdss.az1.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_9ph0R4oa45DtR6R&source=sts  Thank you for your valuable time!  Robin Savinar, Principal Investigator, University of California at Davis, Temporary Migration Research Cluster,  rlsavinar@ucdavis.edu

(Posted January 2015) TWO AU PAIRS SEEKING SITUATION IN UNITED STATES.  From Irène Chriss:  There are two very bright young French women in Cotignac pursuing their university education.  Both need to immerge themselves in the culture of an English speaking country in order to master their language skills. I’ve helped them send out over 300 inquiries to Universities, Alliance Française, bilingual schools, etc., but no organization has responded.  Unlike what you might expect in the United States, their schools do not provide any assistance in helping them locate a situation.  Each of them can provide their own airfare.  Each of them is willing to either work for minimum wage and/or be an au pair for room and board.  Should you know someone that would be interested in a bi-lingual French au pair or a work-intern that does not require permanent work or US health care coverage, etc., please contact Irène Chriss, <ireneinprovence@orange.fr>

http://ruralfranceresources.com is a new site dedicated to providing factual information, insight, cultural perspective and inspiration to Americans wanting to work/live in a French rural area.  Much has been written about the practical issues faced by Americans wanting to live in France, but the specific challenges of doing so in a rural area have largely been ignored.  The site lists numerous general resources, describes the most recent trends in French rural life, and about 8/10 times a year will cover a new theme in depth.  The first such theme is Harnessing the Power of Computer Science Technology to Work in a Rural Area.  It is set up as a blog in order to encourage those wanting to share their experience or observations on the subject to do so.

(Posted August 2014) RURAL FRANCE RESOURCES was specifically designed to make available practical, easy-to-use resources, to Americans interested in living and working in a French rural area.  It describes many organizations and the assistance they might provide, has a list of trends that might affect a person’s professional choices, and specific examples of possible initiatives in a given setting for a given skill set. Visit http://www.ruralfranceresources.com for details.

(November 2013) LAUNCH OF “FRENCHSFO”, A “ONE STOP PLATFORM” WHERE FRANCOPHILES AND FRENCH-RELATED BUSINESSES IN THE BAY AREA CAN EASILY FIND EACH OTHER. It all started in December 2011 when our family relocated from France to San Francisco Bay. Having no relatives or friends in the area, our French-American family naturally gravitated towards other people who have in common their love of France, its culture, cuisine, language and arts. French consulate statistics show that more than 30,000 French nationals were officially registered at San Francisco French consulate in 2010. Not counting nationals (like ourselves) who live here but are not registered. To this number, one can add all Francophiles who love French wines, food, art, fashion, etc. We were very pleasantly surprised by the number of French-related events/businesses in the area and how eager Bay Area Francophiles are to celebrate their passion for anything French. Within 40 miles of San Francisco, 53 meetup groups alone are featuring French interest.  According to SF Chronicle article,  “French companies' transplants grow in Bay Area”, their increased presence is having a direct impact on the local economy: French companies employ 63,000 people throughout California, the most of any state.  Early 2012 came the idea of creating an online tool that would allow us to quickly gather information about all French events happening in the City and the Bay Area but also feature a thorough directory of French related businesses.  For more than a year, we contacted a lot of "francophiles" through meetup groups/mailing lists and ask them for their favorite "French addresses" in the Bay Area. The number of responses was very encouraging. We met very enthusiastic people who told us they were looking forward to seeing the results of our research.  Et voilà ! Nearly two years afterward, we are proud to announce that Frenchsfo is going live. "FrenchSFO" portal offers a list of French-related addresses in the Bay Area that have been recommended by francophile friends met along the way. Of course, list is not set in stone: visitors are encouraged to update us with new finds by e-mailing us at info@frenchsfo.com. They can also review businesses featured on Frenchsfo by clicking on “Leave a review”. Frenchsfo.com will keep feeding visitors with new information on what’s going on in the Bay Area (French meetups, professional gatherings, conferences, exhibits, cooking classes, movies) through an updated calendar, Tweet Feed, Facebook and LinkedIn groups. Frenchsfo.com also features a Blog, which will highlight a “business of the week” and discuss different topics of interests. Guest Bloggers with interesting insights into French related topics are welcome to contact us at info@frenchsfo.com. Frenchsfo also offers, on a daily basis, a virtual newspaper entitled “Frenchsfo Daily”. The paper, mostly in French, displays current international news from a French perspective. Visitors can subscribe to it and share it on their favorite social media. It is a great tool to keep practicing French and keep current with French news.  Frenchsfo hopes to bring together all members of francophone community in the Bay Area, by offering a “one stop portal” where francophiles can easily find information and French-related businesses can promote their services.  www.frenchsfo.com

During the interview, participants will demonstrate and explain the process by which they discover novel French experiences. Participants will be compensated with a $25 Amazon gift card for their time.  Contact:  Kelea Somerton [kelea.somerton@gmail.com] for details.

(July 2013) FRANCOPHILE APP FOR SAN FRANCISCO.  Hello Francophones and Francophiles!  I just created a new iPhone/iPod touch application called French San Francisco.  Its goal is to contain anything and everything French related... like restaurants, cafes, events, companies, landmarks, and so forth.  There is a forum for you all to communicate.  For example:  Looking for a tutor or babysitter or other job postings, etc.  It's very simple, but easy to use.  It's just the beginning and much much more will be added (your help will make it better too).  You can download it at http://frenchsf.com and a feedback form here:  http://goo.gl/8DREc    Thank you so much! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at admin@frenchsf.com - Joshua

(May 2013) A TELEGRAM FROM SACRAMENTO TO PARIS!  A CALL FOR ARTISTS. Have your artwork selected to represent the Sacramento arts community in Paris!   In conjunction with our Serge! Celebration, and for the first time this year, the Sacramento French Film Festival is launching a call for artists so that the Sacramento arts community can be represented on the “Gainsbourg Wall” in Paris!  Create a stencil inspired by French icon Serge Gainsbourg. The winning design will be stenciled on the iconic graffiti-covered wall in front of Gainsbourg’s house on rue de Verneuil in Paris this summer. Photo documentation will be provided back to the winner!   Gainsbourg lived at 5 bis rue de Verneuil from 1969 until his death in 1991. Since he passed away, artists and fans have been paying homage to him by adding graffiti, poems, collages, and stencils on the wall in front of his house, making the “Gainsbourg Wall” a constantly evolving work of art.  Entries will be judged by a team composed of members of the SFFF, Verge Center for the Arts, and local artists.  Artists are to create a stencil tribute to Serge Gainsbourg.  Size: No more than a one yard square.  Content: The only specifications are that the word “Sacramento” must be a component of the artwork and the stencil must roll up for transport to France.  Artists are to provide a stencil and an example of the final product.  THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION IS  THURSDAY, MAY 30th, 2013.  The winner will be announced at the Crest Theatre during the 12th Sacramento French Film Festival. Entries are being accepted at University Art’s Midtown location at 2601 J Street during their regular business hours (call 916-443-5721 for hours).

Students come to improve their already-strong conversational fluency in English. Students accompany you and your family during daily activities. They love to get involved in typical American activities including: BBQ's, pool time, grocery shopping, and errands and are free to travel out of town with you as well. Your Entire Family Benefits from Hosting!  Our students are carefully matched with your family based on age, gender & similar interests. Hosting opens a door for your family to learn even more about the world we share. It gives your family a chance to explore the San Francisco Bay Area through new eyes. It gives your kids an opportunity to connect with an international friend that they can visit sometime! We offer a 5% discount to our host families for our summer adventures to Spain, France and Costa Rica. We’d love to find out more… what’s next? FRENCH PRIMARY CLASS AT THE RENAISSANCE SCHOOL IN OAKLAND. The Renaissance School (TRS), a private Montessori school in Oakland, California for ages 2 years old through middle school, announces it has openings in its French Primary class for children ages four and five years old, born between September 1, 2007 and August 31, 2008.  Students in the French Primary class are introduced to conversational French and are conversed with and instructed at all times in both English and French. Because they are taught by native speakers, children acquire the correct accent and language patterns. The written form of the language is introduced in both languages at this level allowing the children to learn to write and read by the end of that level.  At the Elementary level, students continue to develop their linguistic skills by adding Spanish, bringing to bear a genuine tri-language immersion program. The Renaissance School is believed to be the only Montessori school in the United States that offers a genuine three-language immersion program.  Tours of the school are available by appointment. To schedule a tour of the school, email info@therenaisanceschool.org or call 510-531-8566. Visit:  http://www.therenaissanceschool.org

MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR JEAN-LOUIS MILESI.  My name is Jean-Louis Milesi, I am a screenwriter and director. The latest film that I penned, The Snows of Kilimanjaro by Robert Guediguian, was shown at this year’s edition of the San Francisco International Film Festival. The film was selected at the Cannes Film Festival and also won best screenplay at this year’s Prix Des Lumières (equivalent to The Golden Globe Awards). I wrote all together 10 screenplays for Robert Guediguian of which “Marius and Jeannette” and “Marie-Jo and her two lovers”.   Less than 2 years ago, I arrived to the Bay Area with my family, just to see this region nothing else. Initially we were supposed to spend 1 year. I liked what I saw and here we are 22 months later we’re still here and thinking of staying even longer.    I became extremely inspired cinematically by the Bay Area. Actually, I am in the midst of preparing to shoot a film this summer, called Don’t Give Up The Ghost. It is the story of a family for a family audience. A comedy set in the backdrop of summer in the Bay Area.  I wanted to break away from the traditional ways of raising money and decided to do a kickstarter campaign. We’ve launched this campaign 2 weeks ago and have raised 30% of our goal. If we do not raise the entire amount by our deadline date we do not get any money, it’s all or nothing and your account will not be debited. I like this way of raising funds, it is interactive, the audience is completely  involved from the beginning and they get great incentives for their contributions.   For everyone who would like to support us, our campaign ends on the 5th of June. Every penny counts. You can become a backer of the project for as little as $10. For your generous contribution you can get downloads of the film  to ticket to the  premiere or a day on the set, have a scene in the film, there’s even a week stay in a lovely cottage in Provence...  But if you are maxed out on donations for the year, you can spread the word.   For more information on the project :   http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/569454667/dont-give-up-the-ghost-a-franco-american-family-co. FRENCH STUDENT SEEKING  HOST FAMILY / POSSIBLE AU PAIR POSITION.  Emma is 19 and would like to have an experience living in the US for this summer (July and August).  She is open to do some baby-sitting as a live-in au pair, or she could stay with family friends in Santa Rosa and do some baby-sitting (and offer French language exposure to the children) during the day.  Emma is a student in Paris at a prep school going into an H.E.C or a Sup de Co. next year.  She does not have a driver’s license.  For more information, contact:  Milouda Larsen, milouda@comcast.net or 707.539-7091.

SANTA ROSA FRENCH-AMERICAN CHARTER SCHOOL.  SRFACS will open in the fall of 2012 for first through fourth grades, and will expand through the eighth grade in the future.  This information is being provided as a courtesy to you. There is no affiliation between SRFACS (Santa Rosa French-American Charter School) and AFSR (Alliance Française de Santa Rosa).  For more information about the Charter School, please contact Nas Salamati:  info@srfacs.org  If interested in sending your children to SRFACS, please sign the SRFACS Petition and send it to:  SRFACS (Santa Rosa French-American Charter School)  2097 Stagecoach Rd, Suite 220  Santa Rosa, CA 95404  US  On Friday the 8th of April 2011, Jacqueline Lindenfeld and I attended an informational meeting about a proposed Santa Rosa French-American Charter School known as SRFACS. This meeting was well attended, and we were impressed by the presenters who are leaders in the community in the fields of education and health/nutrition. Other members are leaders in the fields of communications and engineering. SRFACS will open in the fall of 2012 for first through fourth grades, and will expand through the eighth grade in the future.  Their goal is to offer children a solid education based on high academic standards and exposure to the global world. The dual-immersion French-American Charter School curriculum will employ a formula with a proven track record in private schools, and more recently, in charter schools on the East Coast. This opportunity will now be extended to everyone in our community via a free public charter school.  Any parent interested in having their child enrolled in a charter school focused on academic excellence with an opening to the global world is a parent  SRFACS would love to have. There are no enrollment ‘requirements’ (speaking French for example), and that is one of the great strengths of this school.  SRFACS is currently gathering signatures of parents interested in enrolling their children. You may contact this organization at: info@srfacs.org,  or sign the petition above and mail it in.  Lise Melin  Directrice de l’école @ AFSR.

ECI FRENCH HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HOSTING OPPORTUNITY.  We have a great group of French students coming sometime between end of July 7 and August 27th for two to four weeks. It is possible to host part of their trip as we can always find another family to host the rest of their trip.  ECI Immersion students spend the day with your family, accompanying you and your family during daily activities and are free to travel out of town with you. These students really want to experience what it is like to be a member of an American family and love to get involved in even the simplest activities like grocery shopping, errands, or even going to summer school/day camp with your children. ECI's Immersion programs offer serious students a chance to fully immerse themselves in American life. Their focus is to speak and learn entirely in English, while participating in a true cultural exchange.  · Most students are 15-18 years old, both boys and girls. We match our students to teens in the home according to age, gender, hobbies and interests.  · All the students have a minimum of two years of English language ability, with the average range being three to eight years.  · Many speak near-fluent English, and some speak several other languages as well.  · All students have been screened in Europe, and they provide teacher recommendations as well as letters and pictures for their host family.  ECI Immersion host families provide a private bed (can be a shared room), meals, and a safe, welcoming space for their student to experience American life. All of the students bring spending money for snacks, admission/entrance fees, and any activities they may do with our host families/host siblings.  For more information on ECI's international hosting program, please visit us at: http://www.educulture.org/become-a-host-family/index.asp.   Please email Rebekah at rebekah.eci@gmail.com or phone her at (415) 875-9544.

SEEKING A FAMILY TO HOST TWO FRENCH TEENS (17 & 19). My name is Michael Tetzlaff, I am a French teacher at Pinewood School in Los Altos Hills, CA, and I am currently on a sabbatical living in Aix-en-Provence.  The principal pf my daughters' school here has two sons who would love to spend 3-4 weeks this summer in the US. If interested, please contact Michael Tetzlaff mtetzlaff@pinewood.edu

ECI (Edu-Culture International, based in Berkeley) IS URGENTLY SEEKING OUR LAST FEW HOST FAMILIES a group of High-School students coming to the East Bay in August. We are still trying to place a few French girls as well as a few German and Austrian students (both boys and girls).  The students are coming on what we call a language immersion program, and during the few weeks that they are here we keep them occupied M-F from about 830-5, doing all sorts of fun cultural activities around the Bay. They spend several days in the city, visiting places like the MoMA, the Academy of Sciences, the Exploratorium, the Golden Gate etc.  Students are primarily with their host families in the evenings and on the weekends; this helps them to practice their English and to learn about American life and Culture first hand.  The few basic things that we ask our volunteer host families to provide to our students are:  -First and foremost a safe and welcome space in their homes, the same thing that you as parents would want for your children if they were abroad  -Meals, and the makings for a sack lunch, as they will be gone during the day  -Their own bed; this does not mean they need their own room. Many of our students share their  rooms with host siblings of the same gender.  -Minimal transportation to and from the meeting point, M-F. For this group the daily meeting point will be in Downtown Berkeley, either near Berkeley High or the BART station.  The Dates: The French students will be here 7/29-8/19 The Spanish students: 7/30-8/20 Austrian/German: 8/3-8/24.

“FRENCH” APARTMENT (in San Francisco) SOUGHT FOR FILM. My name is Frankie Bourne and I am working on an independent community film project shooting right here in the Bay Area during the upcoming month of July.   The film is titled IN WORLD WAR, and is a smart and quirky sci-fi feature which tells the story of a debt-ridden beta tester trapped in a virtual reality simulation of the “war on terror”.   We are in dire need of a French location to be shot in *for one day only* in the Bay Area.  *Description of the Location:*  Interior of a French Apartment, filled with French furniture, books, and knick knacks – basically an apartment in the Bay Area that could pass for a French apartment.  If you know of any locations, or could put me in contact with anyone who does, you would be doing me a great service.   If your organization has an email listserv that you could forward this to so as to get the word out right away, or if you know anyone that could potentially help, our production crew would greatly appreciate it.   This is a great opportunity to support Bay Area independent filmmaking.   Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing back from you.   fbourne6@gmail.com

SEEKING HOST FAMILIES.  We are good friends with a French family living in France. They have a 16-year-old daughter and a 15-year-old son who would like to come and live with an American family this summer for a short while. They will pay for all expenses. They are also open to the possibility of doing an exchange. They live in a big house in Saint Quentin, France, a couple of hours outside of Paris. Georges, the father, owns a chain of home furnishing/design stores (Du Bout Du Monde). The mother, Karine, is a doctor. Their daughter, Lorine, is really sweet, but a little shy. She would like to be with a family that has a daughter who is a little younger than she is. Her interests are more pre-teen anyway. She¹s NOT into dating, parties, drinking, etc. The son is athletic and out-going. He likes to have fun. He¹d probably be happy in any nice family where the kids are roughly his age. Just to be clear, the two kids would want to be with different families (not the same one).  Any interested families contact me, and I will put you in touch with Georges & Karine.  Thanks so much for your help. ARE YOU INTERESTED IN HAVING YOUR CHILD SING AND ACT IN FRENCH IN A FRENCH MUSICAL?  We are open for Registration until December 1st.  Our production will be Le Roi Soleil ,  the story of the great king Louis the Fourteenth. The songs are wonderful and there is room for astonishing staging.  We will perform, as usual,  with live musicians.  We rehearse a few groups separately and put them together towards the end.  The group of " actors/singers" will be rehearsing on Wednesdays and Fridays  from 4 to 5:30 pm  ( 4th graders and up) . For the  a  "chorus "group , you may select either Mondays  or Thursdays from 4 to 5:30 pm ( kindergarten and up)  We  also have a group of older singers, rehearsing on Saturday afternoons.  Rehearsal period: We will start  rehearsals the first week of December.  This period ( December) is when we unfold the story and we introduce the songs. We will then begin  rehearsals with acting  on January 5.  There will be 2 performances  at the Marin Center Showcase Theater on Saturday May 9, 2009 . The first  performance will be at 3 PM and the second will follow at 7:30 PM. This is the day before Mothers' Day.  We are aware that some children will have other commitments that will end  in December, making it difficult for them to attend our classes. For this reason, we  offer a catch-up class  every Saturday mornings in December. This is only for the initial storytelling period and there will be no such catch-up after the start of the actual rehearsals in January.  Cost:  -$80 /per month/ per child in a" chorus", or "Saturday singers",  ( for a total of 5 months); -$ 120 /per month/ per  "singer/actor",( for a total of  5 months)  At the time of registration, we will also collect  $20 per family which will cover the cost of the musical CD of Le Roi Soleil. This CD will be a learning tool for your child for the duration of the rehearsals, and they will keep it  in their possession.  Please note that we will not accept any registration after the first rehearsal.  We are looking forward to singing and acting with your children.  We think they will be thrilled by the lively music and  period costumes.  Contact  Hélène Dallaire Theatre for Children at helenedallaire@comcast.net  Link to Le Roi Soleil on You Tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQNEV8pq_JM&feature=related  Another link to Le Roi Soleil on You Tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZHgSuAna8k&feature=related

L’ANTICYCLOPEDIE UNIVERSELLE.

It was launched in late 2006 and displays an exquisite range of furniture, pieces of art, decorative items, accessories and other stunning French creations, as well as châteaux and yachts.

LA MAISON DES ARTISTES OF SAN FRANCISCO has been conceived to be an art center gathering together "young artists" with an international concept where pictorial art, music and dance are the symbolism of the Art in the general way. It is simply a warm meeting place where all individuals can get an artistic training from teachers with degrees in art and hence qualified. All classes will be full of wealth and life. For being alive means being open, which will allow for a richer learning experience. In addition, La Maison des Artistes will host quarterly art and music exhibitions by the students. This will facilitate the exchange of artistic flavors and communications among the" young artists" as well as provide an opportunity to present their work to the public. La Maison des Artistes was created in 1999 by Bernard-Emmanuel Beneito who is a former French teacher from Ministry of National Education Paris for 34 years and international post-expressionist artist, academical Knight from Greci Marino Order - Italy. Until now, La Maison des Artistes was strictly a painting school located in Palo Alto. With the desire to offer more styles of art to more people, Bernard-Emmanuel Beneito has expanded La Maison des Artistes to include sculpting-ceramic work as well as music classes. Opening September 2004 in the heart of San Francisco in plush Hayes Valley, La Maison des Artistes is open to all ages and all abilities and hopes to enrich the lives of all. Locations: 333 Hayes Street, Suite 106, San Francisco CA 94102. Email: stlbluesart@netzero.com; Ph/fax 415.621.4813.
