What is an emphasis in Ed Tech?

Educators know from experience that it is not as easy as insert technology, out comes student learning. In fact, incorporating technology into classroom practice requires an understanding of pedagogy, curriculum development, teaching, and learning. To study Ed Tech is to design our future learning environments.

The study of educational technology is a philosophical as well as a pedagogical discussion of teaching and learning. Ed Tech, in its most basic form, is about using technology to create better teaching and learning environments. In the Ed Tech emphasis at SSU, educational technology is studied from a sociocultural perspective that requires students to pull from academic disciplines such as literacy studies, curriculum studies, media education, and the emerging field of digital media and learning.

Ed Tech Courses (EDCT):

The Educational Technology area of emphasis at Sonoma State University is a 12-unit set of four courses within the Curriculum, Teaching & Learning(CTL) concentration. Students in this emphasis learn how technology can support both traditional and innovative ideas in education and other instructional contexts. The Ed Tech emphasis teaches students to be aware of, conversant in, and proficient in current and emerging technologies in educational settings. Students work on authentic, project based endeavors that support entry into a variety of careers.

EDCT 552 Educational Technology Praxis (Fall):
Take a hands‐on approach to learning new media technologies while also theoretically grounding your understanding of the latest research in the field of education.
EDCT 559 Media and Information Literacy (Fall):
Arm yourself with techniques for navigating, researching, analyzing, evaluating, and sharing digital information, and learn about issues of ethics, perspective and bias, copyright and remix that are pertinent in our participatory culture.
EDCT 556 Technology, Pedagogy & Society (Spring):
Focus on how sociocultural issues connect to technology and learning, including access to and use of technology and power and privilege.
EDCT 557 Educational Technology Project Management (Spring):
Conduct an individually‐designed, small‐scale Educational Technology research project in an educational setting.

Learn about different philosophical, historical, social, and psychological perspectives in education.
EDUC 571 Research Paradigms in Education (Fall & Spring):
Become a critical consumer of research through the development of basic principles and techniques of educational research and academic writing.
EDCT 585 Curriculum Development: Theory, Practice, and Evaluation (Fall):
Analyze the sociopolitical, economic, and cultural influences on curriculum development, instructional processes, and learner achievement in a variety of instructional settings.
EDCT 586 Teaching and Learning: Research and Application (Spring):
Analyze teaching and learning strategies and instructional variables as they relate to diverse groups of learners.
