Employee Assistance Program

Sonoma State supports its employees by the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), which provides professional assistance and counseling to employees and their family members.

On occasion you may experience personal problems that can affect the quality of your life and your job performance. The EAP is a service that provides professional assistance and counseling to employees and their family members with personal problems that seem overwhelming. Your EAP program is an employee benefit designed to provide help in resolving these problems.

The EAP specializes in the following concerns: Alcohol, Adjustment Difficulties, Anxiety, Child/Adolescent Concerns, Communication Problems, Depression, Eating Disorders, Emotional Problems, Family/Relationship Problems, Loss or Grief, Marital Discord, Parenting, Self-Esteem, Sexual Abuse, Stress, and Suicidal Thoughts.

Why consider counseling and the EAP program?

It is recognized that from time to time individuals experience personal problems without having the benefit of professional resources necessary to properly resolve these problems. Sonoma State University has established this program to improve the quality of life for you and your family. Problems seem more intense when a person does not have the experience, knowledge or the foresight that is required in difficult times. The EAP counselors are experienced in providing carefully focused personal guidance in a confidential, non-judgmental manner. No problem is too small to bring to the EAP. Your total well-being is our concern.


The EAP program is completely confidential. If you self refer, no one will know unless you choose to tell. Even if your supervisor recommends that you contact the EAP, the nature of your problems and the content of counseling sessions will not be disclosed to the company or other individuals. All client records are kept at the EAP office. Your job will not be in jeopardy if you use the EAP program. In most cases it should help you solve problems before they affect your work. You are encouraged to use the program when a problem causes you to experience difficulty in your personal life or on the job.


Eligible employees and dependents who meet the requirements of Sonoma State University, group medical insurance program. The EAP program will cost you nothing. It is paid for by your employer and is another benefit for you and your family. Sonoma State University has arranged to have Employee Development Services (EDS) provide these services to you. The EDS counselor will meet with you privately to discuss and review your problem. Your counselor will suggest the appropriate action or options to be taken. If however, you need additional assistance, it is your financial responsibility. Your group medical plan may pay a portion. Check your group medical plan for more details.

How do I use the EAP?

Just call Employee Development Services at (707) 526-3244 or 1-800-303-3244. Remember, you or a family member may use this service when needed. It is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. EDS specializes in providing EAP services to employees and family members. The EDS staff of employee assistance professionals is committed to providing quality support to help you resolve your problems. The EDS counselors are concerned with your total well-being.
