Identify & Self

In simple terms, identity can be defined as a person’s conceptions and presentations of their individuality and of their group memberships. Identity can be expressed in a variety of ways and can be formed through various means. While identity is commonly understood to be the thing that makes all people distinct from each other, it can be ironically noted that identity is often formed from group interactions, societal expectations, as well as media and culture. Despite identity being formed by a various host of experiences, at the end of the day it is the identities we choose to label ourselves with that are the most important. Self-identification is one of the most common and powerful ways of forming and accepting an identity; however, self-identification does carry its own set of stigmas.
