Request for Proposals: Student SOURCE Awards

Student SOURCE Awards are made possible as a result of Instructionally Related Activity (IRA) funds and Student Success and Completion Initiative funds from the CSU Chancellor’s Office.  These awards are intended to support undergraduate research and creative projects across all academic disciplines at SSU. 


Award Amount:  Each Student SOURCE Award provides up to $1000 to be used for travel and/or supplies related to the funded research/creative project.  Travel funding can be used to throughout the process of completing the project, or for travel to present the project off campus. Award recipients must be undergraduates enrolled on a full-time basis and enrolled in a course directly related to their research or creative project.


Application:  The application should be submitted by the student requesting funding, and consists of three parts:
1.  An online application, completed below.
2.  A detailed proposal (2–3 double-spaced pages) which includes the following information, submitted to daniel.smith@sonoma.edu or to Daniel Smith in Schulz 1125:

  1. What is the purpose and/or goal(s) of your project?
  2. How will you carry out the project? (materials, methods, process, timetable for completion, etc.)
  3. What are the anticipated results or conclusions or of your project (if applicable)?
  4. How will the completion of this project contribute to your future career/academic goals? 

3.  A Faculty Sponsor Form, submitted to daniel.smith@sonoma.edu or to Daniel Smith in Schulz 1125.

Deliverables:  Each Student SOURCE Award must result in a presentation at the annual Symposium of Research and Creativity in May. Arts/Humanities students may present a powerpoint or other multimedia presentation rather than a poster.

Funding Restrictions:  Funds may only be used to support the students named on the award and their research/creative projects, and may not be used to cover expenses for a course, department, or students or projects not named on the award. Funds may not be used to pay for research assistants, computers or related equipment (i.e. tablets, printers), faculty travel, or international travel. $250 limit per award for mileage expenses. Recipients of Student SOURCE Award funds are not eligible to receive a Koret Scholars Award or Faculty SOURCE Award funds for the same project (i.e. only one award type allowed per project). Poster printing for conferences/symposia will be provided by the SOURCE office (Schulz 1125) to awardees when requests are submitted with at least a 1-week advance notice. Receipts for all expenditures must be submitted by 6/15/18.
