Course Catalogue Description:

Lecture - 1 hour-equivalent: Series of lectures on topics of interest and trend of technologies in the relevant fields of electrical engineering. A maximum of 1 unit can be applied to the ES or CES majors. The students may not miss any of the ES lectures unless it is substantiated acceptably. An acceptable technical summary report on each ES lecture must be submitted after the presentation. There may be other tasks (such as acceptable presentaion on a topic) required. The course grade (CR/NC for EE 497, A-F for CES497) will depend upon evaluation of the reports and the presentation.

  1. Expand the scope of student in various trends of science and technology and the impact of engineering on nature and human life.
  2. Improve student communication skills in effective technical writing and presentation.
  3. Recognize the need for life-long learning.

  1. Appreciate the trends of science and technology and impact of engineering on nature and human life.
  2. Ability to communicate and network with technology experts in industry and academia.
  3. Ability to report on writing technical talks effectively.

Course Requirements:

The student is required to attend all the ES lectures, take good notes, and submit an acceptable technical report on each lecture as follows:

  1. The attendance is substantiated by a signature sheet. Prepare a copy of the ES Lecture Attendance form with your name and the information about the lecture to each lecture and ask the instructor to sign it for you. The instructor generally hosts each lecture you attend.
  2. The report you write should be relatively formal and technical following the CES597 or ES497 Report Formats. The report summarizes the presentation in 500-600 words including what you observed and learned, the applications, and how the technology can be used to improve the nature and human life.
  3. A soft copy of your report must be submitted electronically as an attachment in Microsoft Word after each lecture and before the beginning of the following lecture. Use CES597 or ES497 Report Formats for naming the file for the report. Late submissions will not be accepted.
  4. The instructor will review the report and may provide comments and ask for revision and resubmission of the report. Resubmission is due within one week.
  5. Since some students have shown interest to improve their job search, resume writing, and interview and presentation skills in the recent course feedbacks, we are planning to have some presentations by the students on these topics during the class time. Each student selects one of the assigned Presentation_topics, research and put together slides for a 1/2-hour presentation on the topic to the class for their own and the classmates benefits. Each student is expected to make first an outline for her/his presentation and put together the slides and submit to the instructor at least a week before the presentation for review and for approval.

Attend all the SIX ES lectures and Submit SIX acceptable reports on ES lectures plus make acceptable slides and presentation.
