In a book, as in all things, there are lines of articulation or segmentarity, strata and territories; but also lines of flight, movements of deterritorialization and destratification. Comparative rates of flow on these lines produce phenomena of relative slowness and viscosity, or, on the contrary, of acceleration and rupture. All these, lines and measurable speeds, constitutes an ASSEMBLAGE.

Deleuze and Guattari, A Thousand Plateaus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia

This course consists of an exploration and critical analysis of literary works which differ in terms of genre, culture and time. The main objective is to learn about the power relations inherent in the truths and structure and style of literature and how these are assembled and, secondly, to map the implications of such relations for contemporary social and cross-cultural issues.

The following are examples of questions which are addressed in this course: what is literature?, what is the truth of literature?, what is a Master Narrative?, how does literature, as an art of writing relate to political and economic questions?, if art by definition attempts to give an authentic picture of reality, how authentic is its representation of the voice/experiences of the common people in literature?, what are the procedures to introduce the voice of the people into the authorized language?, what, if any, are the shifts in the position of such voice?, to what extent is the remaking of social reality dependent on the remaking of literature?


1.This is a seminar, which means that, for every session, you must come prepared to discuss the readings. Notify me in advance if you must miss a session (acceptable only due to verified illness or family emergency).

2.Response papers due every week. Write a 1-2 page response paper typewritten, double-spaced in which you discuss your reflections on the readings.

3. Essays: based on your response papers, readings, panel discussions, everyday life, etcetera, you will produce THREE 4-5 page essays.

4.Student-led Discussions: each seminar will be led by a student who will discuss her or his responses to the material assigned on that particular day.

EVALUATION CRITERIA (The key word here is "performance" as opposed to "how much you got out of the course" or "how much you feel you have learned").

A - Reserved for truly outstanding performance in all aspects of the course, including perfect attendance.

B - Strong performance; above satisfactory.

C - Satisfactory grasp of course content and adequate performance in terms of participation in the learning process and writing.

D -Less than satisfactory.

F - Inadequate performance.
